The city of Prince George bestowed The Freedom of the City award onto the Rocky Mountain Rangers today.
This tradition dates back to ancient Rome, which gives military units the privilege to march into a city with drums beating and colours flying.
“It’s an incredible honour,” says Amedeo Vecchio, Deputy Commanding Officer of the Rocky Mountain Rangers.
“People get to see all the good work and all the people who are apart of our unit, that are citizens of Prince George and outlining communities. Most people have full-time jobs and families, but people still find time to contribute,” added Vecchio.
Mayor Lyn Hall says it was an honour to take part in a historical event.
“It’s pretty special for me. As I said in my remarks, I feel very privileged to do this, and to be there with General Wynnyk, and have the opportunity to be a part of the ceremony and celebration is pretty amazing.”
Prince George use to be home to “A” Company, but they were relocated in Kamloops in 1970.
In 2011, “B” Company was introduced due in large part from citizen volunteers in PG.
The Freedom of the City award is the highest honour council can give on an organization.
