NHL: (First game in the best-of-seven Conference semi-final)

Winnipeg Jets  4  Nashville Predators  1

Connor Hellebuyck made 47 saves for the Jets. Game two goes Sunday at 4PM in Nashville.

The Boston Bruins visit the Tampa Bay Lightning today at noon in their opener.

Tonight at 5, San Jose down 1-0 visits Vegas.

On Sunday afternoon (12:15), Pittsburgh up 1-0 plays at Washington.

The finalists for the Hart (MVP) Trophy are New Jersey Devils left-winger Taylor Hall, Los Angeles Kings centre Anze Kopitar and Colorado Avalanche centre Nathan MacKinnon.

Brian Burke is leaving the Calgary Flames after stepping down as president of hockey operations. The Flames made the playoffs just twice in the five years the 62-year-old Burke held his front office job.

 

WESTERN HOCKEY LEAGUE:

Both WHL Conference Finals resume tonight with Tri-City at Everett in the West and Lethbridge at Swift Current in the East.

The Silvertips lead the Americans 3-1 while the Hurricanes and Broncos are even at 2-2.

A couple of former PG Cougars, in their last year of junior hockey, are  playing a major role with Lethbridge.

Centre Brad Morrison leads the WHL playoff scoring race with 36 points (15G, 21A) in 14 post-season games.

(Michael Rasmussen and Morgan Geekie of Tri-City are second and third respectively with 29 and 26 points, although Geekie leads in goals with 16)

Defenceman Tate Olson has 16 points (three goals) in 14 games to go along with a team high +15 rating.

 

DOYLE CUP JUNIOR HOCKEY:

Wenatchee Wild  3  Spruce Grove Saints  2  (OT)

Wild lead the best-of-seven series 1-0 with game two tonight in Wenatchee.

The Wild improved their home playoff record to 12-0, outscoring the opposition 54-20.

Wenatchee advanced by winning the BCHL Fred Page Cup 4-1 over the Prince George Spruce Kings.

The Doyle Cup winner will qualify for the RBC National Junior ‘A’ Championship May 12th to 20th in Chilliwack.

PG SPRUCE KINGS:

Prince George Spruce Kings defenseman Dylan Anhorn has committed to play NCAA Division 1 hockey
for Union College, beginning in the 2019/2020 season.

Anhorn is the 10th Spruce King from the 2017-18 roster to commit to college, with half-a-dozen of those
players returning for the 2018/2019 season.

 

BCHL:

The Trail Smoke Eaters of the BCHL have hired Jeff Tambellini as head coach and general manager.

Tambellini, a former BCHL player, suited up in 242 NHL games.

He was an assistant coach in the 2017-18 season with Michigan of the NCAA.

 

VOLLEYBALL:

Seven Prince George Youth Volleyball Club teams are at the Provincials in Abbotsford.

Prince George Red 15U Girls have advanced to the quarter-finals to guarantee a top eight finish.

Three other teams are in the girls 15 and 16-year-olds divisions and three more in the  boys 15/16 age group.

Competition wraps up Sunday.

(Series tied 3-3 with the seventh and deciding game Sunday in Cleveland)

There are a pair of NBA games tonight: Milwaukee at Boston (5pm) in game seven of the Eastern quarter-finals followed by New Orleans at Golden State (7:30) in game one of the Western semi-finals.

 

MLB:

Blue Jays slip to 14-11.

 

MINOR FOOTBALL:

Prince George Minor Football will hold a quarterback and receivers camp on Sunday.

The special guest is former BC Lions receiver Paris Jackson, who spent 12 seasons in the CFL, with his last year in 2014.
