VOLLEYBALL:

Seven Prince George Youth Volleyball Club teams competed at the Provincials for 15 and 16-year-olds in Abbotsford.

Prince George Red 15U Girls earned the bronze medal.

They lost the semi-final in the third set 15-13 to Kelowna, but came back to finish third out of 64 teams by winning two sets to none over Whiterock.

No other PG team captured a medal although the 15U boys red team placed 4th.

Next up will be Nationals May 17-20 in Edmonton.

 

NHL: (Two games in the best-of-seven Conference semi-finals)

(Bruins lead the Eastern Conference semi-final 1-0 with game two Monday (4PM) in Tampa)

A pair of NHL playoff games today: Pittsburgh at Washington (noon) and Winnipeg at Nashville (4pm). The Penugins and Jets both lead 1-0.

The Buffalo Sabres will pick first in the 2018 NHL Draft after winning the lottery. They will be followed by Carolina and Montreal, who both moved up.

The Sabres are expected to select highly touted Swedish defenceman Rasmus Dahlin on June 22 in Dallas.

The Vancouver Canucks dropped one spot and will pick 7th.

WESTERN HOCKEY LEAGUE: (5th games in the best-of-seven Conference Finals)

(Silvertips lead 3-2 with game six Monday in Tri-City)

East:  Swift Current Broncos  4  Lethbridge Hurricanes  3
(Broncos lead 3-2 with game six Monday in Lethbridge)

A couple of former PG Cougars, in their last year of junior hockey, are piling up the points for Lethbridge.

Centre Brad Morrison scored once in a losing cause and leads the WHL playoff scoring race with 37 points (16G, 21A) in 15 post-season games.

(Michael Rasmussen and Morgan Geekie of Tri-City are second and third respectively with 30 and 27 points)

Defenceman Tate Olson picked up a pair of assists and has 18 points (three goals) in 15 games, to go along with a team high +15 rating.

 

DOYLE CUP JUNIOR HOCKEY:

(Wild with three unanswered goals in the 3rd period, the last two in an empty net)

Wenatchee Wild  3  Spruce Grove Saints    2   (Friday OT)

Wild lead the best-of-seven series 2-0 with game three Tuesday in Spruce Grove.

The Wild improved their home playoff record to 13-0, outscoring the opposition 57-20.

Wenatchee advanced by winning the BCHL Fred Page Cup 4-1 over the Prince George Spruce Kings.

The Doyle Cup winner will qualify for the RBC National Junior ‘A’ Championship May 12th to 20th in Chilliwack.

PG SPRUCE KINGS:

Prince George Spruce Kings defenseman Dylan Anhorn has committed to play NCAA Division 1 hockey starting in the 2019/20 season for Union College.

Anhorn is the 10th Spruce King from the 2017-18 roster to commit to college, with half-a-dozen of those
players returning for the 2018/2019 season.

 

BCHL:

Jeff Tambellini has taken over head coach and general manager of the Trail Smoke Eaters.

He was an assistant coach in the 2017-18 season with Michigan of the NCAA.

Tambellini, a former BCHL player, suited up in 242 NHL games.

LACROSSE:

The Prince George Senior Lacrosse regular season will continue Monday night at 8 at Kin 1 with the defending champion Westwood Pub Devils against the Co-op Petroleum Stylers.
