BC Cancer Agency noticing mammography participation down

The BC Cancer Agency is seeing a trend in the amount of women getting screened for breast cancer.

The agency says only 50 percent of eligible women in BC are getting mammograms.

However Medical Director of Screening and Mammography Dr. Christine Wilson says the participation rate is down slightly.

“The participation rate is down minimally, its down about 1-2%,” says Wilson, “and comparison to participation rates across the country, BC is much the same as the rest of Canada.”

Wilson says one reason screenings have gone down is because of the negative publicity mammograms have received recently.

Women between the ages of 50-74 are reminded to get a mammogram every two years.
