Evacuation alert for area southwest of Prince George

The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George has issued an evacuation alert for 39 properties on the Upper River Road area, southwest of Prince George.

The alert has been issued due to flooding and high water in the area.

“With the rising water, we’re seeing there is the potential for the access to potentially be cut off for those residents,” says RDFFG Information Officer Renee McCloskey.

“It’s not as much as the water is impacting their homes as much as it could impact their ability to get in or out of the area.”

Those in the area are being asked to prepare for an evacuation and to take precautions to help prevent damage to their home, property, and their personal safety.

Tips include:

  • Move equipment and farm implements to higher ground;
  • make arrangements for pets and livestock to be moved to safe locations;
  • gather important papers in water-tight containers and move valuables to alternate locations; and
  • prepare a 72-hour personal survivor kit for you and your family.

The public is being reminded to exercise extreme caution near rivers and streams. High water-flows can cause bank erosion and instability, and currents in the river can be volatile and unpredictable. The RDFFG is asking everyone to avoid all streams and bodies of water with rising levels.
