PG residents raise more than $26,000 on McHappy Day

McDonald’s lovers in Prince George brought more than just their Big Mac cravings on Wednesday.

The fast-food chain’s annual McHappy Day brought in $26,341 from all restaurants in the Northern capital, an increase of 32% from 2017.

Half of the proceeds are going to the City’s Child Development Centre (CDC), and spokesperson Joan Beek explains how the money will be spent.

“We need wheelchairs, walkers, and other specialized equipment that you cannot just get in any kind of store. Another vital piece of equipment would be communication devices for children who need extra assistance for communicating. Then there’s also games and toys, but they’re all educational and learning-specific kinds of resources that sometimes are helpful for kids for short term, and that can be used my multiple kids.”

She adds the CDC assists more than 1,000 kids in the region each year.

“We do service Prince George primarily, but we will also have children from MacKenzie and out of the Robson Valley as well. I think it’s ‘win-win’ for both parties because they get some of the proceeds as well for Ronald McDonald House [of BC and Yukon], which also helps a lot of our families that receive services from us.”

One dollar from every Big Mac, Happy Meal, or hot beverage went to the cause.

VISTA Radio, 94.3 the GOAT and Country 97FM, participated in McHappy Day at the McDonald’s location on Massey and Westwood Drives.
