James Paxton (2-1) tossed a no-hitter, the first Canadian to do so in 73 years.

(Toronto-born Dick Fowler threw one for the Philadelphia Athletics in 1945)

The six-foot-four left-hander from Ladner, B.C., struck out seven and walked three batters in a 99-pitch gem that drew a rousing ovation from the 20,513 fans at Rogers Centre.

Paxton threw the sixth no-hitter in Mariners franchise history.

The 19-17 Blue Jays are third in the AL East, 6 1/2 games behind both the NY Yankees and the Boston Red Sox.

Seattle is third in the AL West, 1/2 a game back of the LA Angels and one game behind Houston.

Blue Jays closer Roberto Osuna has been placed on administrative leave by Major League Baseball.

According to Toronto police, Osuna was arrested and charged with assault on a woman.

He is scheduled to appear in court June 18th.

 

WESTERN HOCKEY LEAGUE:

Swift Current Broncos  3  Everett Silvertips  2  (OT)

Glenn Gawdin scored his third goal of the game at 2:40 of overtime to give the Broncos a 2-1 series lead in the WHL Final for the Ed Chynoweth Cup.

Game four will be played tonight in Everett.

The WHL champion advances to the Memorial Cup May 18th to 27th in Regina.

PRINCE GEORGE COUGARS:

The Prince George Cougars leading scorer in the 2017-18 season, Jared Bethune, has committed to play men’s hockey at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario starting in the fall of this year.

The 21-year-old Bethune was named the Cougars MVP after notching 69 points in 71 games.

 

PRINCE GEORGE SPRUCE KINGS:

After suiting up one final season with the Prince George Spruce Kings in 2018-19, high scoring forward Ben Poisson will head to University of Maine.

The BCHL Most Sportsmanlike Player this year with 51 points and two penalty minutes in 53 games, will play NCAA Division 1 hockey in 2019-20 for the Black Bears.

 

ROYAL BANK CUP JUNIOR HOCKEY:

The Wenatchee Wild play the host Chilliwack Chiefs Saturday night on the opening day of the RBC National Junior ‘A’ Championship.

Assistant Brian Maloney has taken over as head coach of the Chiefs after Chilliwack fired Jason Tatarnic last week after four years on the job.

The other three teams in the tournament are the Steinbach Pistons (Manitoba Junior Hockey League), Ottawa Junior Senators (Central Canada Hockey League), and Wellington Dukes (Ontario Junior Hockey League).

 

NHL:

The second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs will conclude Thursday night (5PM start) with Winnipeg at Nashville in the 7th and deciding game.

The winner plays Vegas in the Western Final.

The NHL Eastern Conference Final open Friday in Tampa between the Lightning and the Washington Capitals.

The Washington-Tampa match-up will include Caps forward Brett Connolly of Prince George against Lightning coach Jon Cooper of Prince George.

The 26-year-old Connolly will be playing against the team that drafted him.

The Carolina Hurricanes have promoted Rod Brind’Amour from assistant to head coach.

Brind’Amour replaces Bill Peters who left the team to become coach of the Calgary Flames.

In addition, the Hurricanes have named Don Waddell club president and general manager after serving in that capacity on an interim basis.

 

WORLD HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIP: (in Denmark)

Canada plays its fourth game at the World Hockey Championship in Denmark on Thursday (11:15 a.m.) against Norway.

The Canadian team is 2-1 (a 5-4 loss to the USA; 10-0 win over Korea and a 7-1 victory over Denmark).

There is growing speculation that Toronto Raptors head coach Dwayne Casey won’t be back with the team next season after getting swept for the second straight year by the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Raptors are the first #1 seed in the NBA to be swept prior to the Conference/Division Final in 49 years since the 1969 Baltimore Bullets.
