PG’s Cunningham, Schweizer skate to golden performance at Aboriginal Nationals

Two Prince George players helped BC capture the gold medal in the Male Division at the National Aboriginal Hockey Championships in Membertou, Nova Scotia.

Forward Corey Cunningham notched three assists and defenceman Jayce Schweizer picked up two assists in the final as BC rallied for a 6-5 victory over Saskatchewan in overtime.

Saskatchewan blew a 5-2 lead after two periods.

BC went 2-1-1 in the round robin before knocking off Manitoba 4-3 in the semi-finals.

Cunningham, who played this season with the Prince George Spruce Kings, finished the tournament with two goals and six assists in six games.

Schweizer ended up with five assists in half-a-dozen games.

BC, coached by Justin Fillion of Prince George, lost the Aboriginal female bronze medal game 4-3 in overtime to Saskatchewan.

The BC team, with five players from PG and one each from Smithers, Fraser Lake and Williams Lake, went 3-0-1 in the round robin before falling 10-1 to Manitoba in the semis.

Manitoba beat Ontario 5-3 in the final.
