Minister of energy visits Alaska to discuss new projects

Bill Bennett is in Alaska to discuss trans-boundary mining projects, reclamation programs and environmental regulations.

The Minister of energy and mines says the province has an obligation to discuss the KSM copper-gold mine with the neighbouring state.

Alaska has asked for greater involvement in the approval process, However, Bennett says the U.S does not have any power to Veto the Project:

“There is I think a very good reason for, British Columbia and Canada to care about what the U.S and what the State of Alaska thinks about what were doing given that the water does flow into Alaska so its a matter of being a good neighbour its also a matter of leaving our legal obligations under the treaty that exists between Canada and the U.S”

The proposed project has the potential to create up to eighteen hundred jobs during construction and another one thousand once operational.
