“18 millimetres of rain fell in over an hour”: Environment Canada

Mother Nature made sure Prince George’s three-day heatwave went out like a lion.

The large volume of rain that fell from the sky flooded 5th and Tabor and also found its way into Kin 1.

“It was quite an active day all through the interior, some of the weather stations including the one in the city recorded 17.9 millimetres of rain that fell in just over an hour,” says Lisa Erven, Environment Canada Meteorologist.

Several parts of the city resembled more of a swamp thanks to the large volumes of water lying around along with the number of trees that fell in the process.

Erven adds the hot and humid conditions paved the way for a significant rainfall.

“When you get conditions like they were yesterday where the air is quite moist you get and is capable of unleashing a large amount of water in a very short amount of time one of the things that you commonly get are flash-flooding and pooling of hard surfaces.”

“The main threats for today will be those heavy downpours and we could see rainfall rates of 25 millimetres per hour with these cells so again, the risk of flash flooding on roads and surfaces is there again.”

The northern capital is under a severe thunderstorm watch for the second straight day.

Last night’s rainfall has forced the city to close all sports fields and ball diamonds.
