NHL:

Barry Trotz is moving from District of Columbia to the Empire State!

The Stanley Cup-winning head coach of the Washington Capitals has signed a new deal to become the new bench boss of the New York Islanders.

His five-year contract is worth more than $20 million, averaging roughly $4 million each year.

Trotz won the Presidents’ Trophy twice as the NHL’s best regular-season team (2016, 2017), along with the Jack Adams Trophy as the league’s top coach in 2016.

He won 205 regular-season games with the Caps.

 

NHL CENTRAL SCOUTING:

Forward Jackson Leppard of the PG Cougars is ranked 122nd among North American skaters in the final Central Scouting rankings for the NHL Draft Friday and Saturday in Dallas.

Leppard is one of 46 WHL players on the list, after setting career highs in goals (15), assists (21) and points (36) in 68 games.

The midterm rankings had Leppard 95th.

Former Cougars Justin Almeida (Moose Jaw) and Kody McDonald (Prince Albert) are ranked 88th and 178th respectively.

There are no Prince George Spruce Kings on the list of more than 200 players.

The Spruce Kings leading scorer Ethan de Jong was ranked 154th at mid-term.

17-year old Swedish defenceman Rasmus Dahlen is expected to go first overall to the Buffalo Sabres.

Vancouver Canucks have the seventh overall pick.

 

NBA:

The Phoenix Suns selected centre Deandre Ayton of the University of Arizona Wildcats first overall in the 2018 NBA Draft Thursday night.

The Toronto Raptors did not have a pick in the first round.

 

UNBC TIMBERWOLVES:

UNBC’s 2018-19 campaign for basketball starts in the Fall on the road.

The Timberwolves begin their quest for another great season, October 26th and 27th, at Mount Royal University (MRU) against the Cougars.

The home opener at the Northern Sports Centre is scheduled for November 2nd and 3rd against the Winnipeg Wesmen.
