A new report shows more needs to be to narrow the completion rate gap between Aboriginal and Non-Aboriginal students.
In the 2017-2021 Framework for Enhancing Student Learning report, 2016/17 graduation rates for Aboriginal students dropped to 57 per cent from 62 per cent a year prior.
Non-Aboriginal students have a completion rate of 79 per cent.
“Our Aboriginal grad rates are better than some districts in the province but there are districts who are doing better,” says Marilyn Marquis-Forster, Superintendent of SD57.
“One of the strategies we are looking is talking to those districts and seeing what programs and supports they have in place that are being successful.”
“We do have some new programs at the primary level that are really focusing on students achievement in numeracy and literacy and we believe that will go a long way on assisting graduation.”
Marquis-Forster believes if students have strong numeracy and literacy skills it can help them build confidence in the future.
Overall the school districts six-year completion rate fell below the provincial average by 10 per cent.
