NHL:

Prince George Cougars forward Jackson Leppard was not drafted on Day Two of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft in Dallas, Texas.

However, former PG and Cariboo Cougar Justin Almeida was selected in the fifth round, 129th overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The 19-year-old from Kitimat, BC tallied 98 points (43G, 55A) in 72 games last season with the Moose Jaw Warriors.

Almeida was traded to the Warriors from the Cougars in the 2016-17 season.

The Vancouver Canucks selected six players at this year’s draft, including three defensemen (Quinn Hughes [7th], Jett Woo [37th], Toni Utunen [130th]), two forwards (Tyler Madden [68th], Artyom Manukyan [186th]), and one goaltender (Matthew Thiessen [192nd]).

The Calgary Flames made a splash at the draft during rounds two through seven on Saturday, making a trade with the Carolina Hurricanes.

Heading to Calgary is defenseman Noah Hanifin and forward Elias Lindholm in exchange for defenseman Dougie Hamilton, forward Michael Ferland, and prospect Adam Fox.

35-year-old Russian Ilya Kovalchuk is returning to the NHL after a five-stint in the KHL.

The veteran forward has signed a three-year deal worth $18.75 million ($6.25 million annually).
