SD 57 singers win at provincial level

Senior tapestry singers at School District 57 won their class at the provincial level. This includes students in grades eight through 12.

Quinson Elementary music teacher Carolyn Duerksen explains how difficult it is to accomplish that.

“Our group is a collection of young singers who are non-auditioned and I have been teaching for 27 years, I have had tapestry for 11 years, and this is the first time that we’ve won in this class so it’s a really great feeling for all of us.”

The group was unable to go to Victoria for the provincial festival so had to have their music professionally recorded. Just over a week ago, they found out they won the JFK class 105.

Duerksen made the point of being a non-auditioned group, making this accomplishment even more special.

“Often, you are in a class with children or programs that are ongoing,” she says.

“Meaning the children have started at age five and then carry on, carry on, carry on, so it is really sweet that a group like this can pull together as a team and have such a terrific win.”

They beat out teams from Kamloops and Kelowna to win.
