NHL:

Prince George Cougars forward Jackson Leppard was not drafted on Day Two of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft in Dallas, Texas.

However, former PG and Cariboo Cougar Justin Almeida was selected in the fifth round, 129th overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The 19-year-old from Kitimat, BC tallied 98 points (43G, 55A) in 72 games last season with the Moose Jaw Warriors.

Almeida was traded to the Warriors from the Cougars in the 2016-17 season.

The Vancouver Canucks selected six players at this year’s draft, including three defensemen (Quinn Hughes [7th], Jett Woo [37th], Toni Utunen [130th]), two forwards (Tyler Madden [68th], Artyom Manukyan [186th]), and one goaltender (Matthew Thiessen [192nd]).

A day after the draft, Vancouver traded centre Michael Chaput to the Chicago Blackhawks for centre Tanner Kero.

The 25-year-old Kero recorded three points (1G, 2A) in eight NHL games last season.

35-year-old Russian Ilya Kovalchuk is returning to the NHL after a five-stint in the KHL.

The veteran forward has signed a three-year deal worth $18.75 million ($6.25 million annually).

The Washington Capitals have signed American defenseman John Carlson to an eight-year, $64 million contract extension through until the 2026-27.

The 28-year-old tallied 68 points (15G, 53A) in all 82 regular season games this past year with Washington, and 20 points (5G, 15A) in 24 playoff games en route to the team’s first Stanley Cup.

The Calgary Flames made a splash at the draft during rounds two through seven on Saturday, making a trade with the Carolina Hurricanes.

Heading to Calgary is defenseman Noah Hanifin and forward Elias Lindholm in exchange for defenseman Dougie Hamilton, forward Michael Ferland, and prospect Adam Fox.

The Ottawa Senators have agreed to a one-year contract extension with defenseman Chris Wideman for a mere $1 million.

He put up eight points (3G, 5A) in only 16 games in the 2017-18 season.

 

CARIBOO COUGARS:

Alumni Ryan Howse has been named an assistant coach of the new Cariboo Cougars minor midget team (15-year-olds) for the 2018-19 season.

Howse will work under bench boss Brian Toll and alongside fellow assistant Chase Astorino.

The soon-to-be 27-year-old has 59 games in the American Hockey League (AHL) and 20 in the ECHL under his belt as a player.

Howse also helped coach the Spruce Kings briefly in 2016, but left on his own militia.

In the year prior, he won a provincial championship as the head coach of the Coast Inn of the North midget Tier 1 Cougars.

 

MLB:

The 36-41 Blue Jays continue their seven-game road-trip with a three-game series against the defending MLB-champion Houston Astros.

Game times are set for Monday (5:10PM), Tuesday (5:10PM), and Wednesday (11:10AM).

Blue Jays closer Roberto Osuna has been suspended 75 games for violating the MLB’s domestic abuse policy.

He is eligible to return this season as early as August 4th.
