WORLD CUP SOCCER: (in Russia)

From 32 countries to two!

The FIFA World Cup Final in Russia will feature France and Croatia on Sunday.

Croatia upset England in extra time on Wednesday 2-1 to send them to their first-ever championship game in the nation’s history.

France is looking for its second World Cup title and the first since winning the 1998 Finals on home soil.

They blanked Belgium 1-0 on Tuesday.

The only other World Cup meeting between these two countries was in the same 1998 tournament in the semi-finals, to which the French prevailed 2-1.

The 2018 Final kicks off Sunday, 8AM Pacific in Moscow.

England and Belgium will play in the third-place match on Saturday at 7AM.

PRINCE GEORGE SENIOR LACROSSE:

The RPR Mechancial/JR Construction Bandits and the Westwood Pub Devils begin the best-of-five Finals on Tuesday, July 17th.

The same teams met in the 2017 championship series, with the Devils needing five games on a comeback from 0-2 to beat the Bandits.

Game time goes for 8PM at Kin 1 Arena.

Prince George resident Cole Paciejeswski will be playing for Scotland at the Federation of International Lacrosse World Championships starting today from Israel.

Scotland will play their first game on Friday against Australia.

The 2018 tournament runs until next Friday, July 20th.

MLB:

Atlanta Braves 9 Toronto Blue Jays 5

The 42-49 Blue Jays now begin a four-game series in Boston against the Red Sox before the All-Star break.

Game times are tonight (4:10PM), Friday (4:10PM), Saturday morning (10:05AM), and Sunday morning (10:05AM).

Pitcher J.A. Happ is the only Blue Jays representative heading to the mid-summer classic, the first time in his 12-year career.

The 2018 All-Star Game from Washington, DC goes for Tuesday at 5PM.

Jared Young of Prince George had his best game as a Myrtle Beach Pelican following Wednesday night’s 6-3 victory over the Carolina Mudcats.

The 23-year-old posted two hits in the victory.

Young was called up to the Chicago Cubs Advanced Class ‘A’ Affiliate after being named a Midwest League All-Star with the South Bend Cubs.

He was named the Chicago Cubs minor league player of the month in June.

WIMBLEDON:

Canadian Milos Raonic has been eliminated from Wimbledon, losing to American John Isner (#9) in the Quarterfinals in four sets (7-6, 6-7, 4-6, 3-6).

For the 27-year-old Raonic, this was his fourth quarterfinal at the All-England Club and third year in a row.

The ninth-seeded Isner will face the eighth-seeded Kevin Anderson, who upset tournament number-one seed Roger Federer in five-set comeback Wednesday morning (2-6, 6-7, 7-5, 6-4, 13-11).

The winner of that semi-final match will face either Novak Djokovic (#12) and Rafael Nadal (#2).

On the women’s side, Serena Williams will play for her eighth Wimbledon title after winning her semi-final match in straight sets over Julia Gorges.

The 36-year-old will face another German, 20-year-old Angelique Kerber, who will be playing for her first All England Club championship.

The final is scheduled for Saturday.

 

NHL:

The Arizona Coyotes have acquired NHL veteran Marian Hossa in a trade with the Chicago Blackhawks.

Hossa did not play a single game last season due to a skin condition.

The trade also sends Vinnie Hinostroza, Jordan Oesterle, and a 2019 third-round draft pick to Arizona, while Marcus Kruger, Mackenzie Entwhistle, Jordan Maletta, Andrew Campbell, and a 2019 fifth-round pick to Chicago.

The deal opens up more than $7 million in cap space for the Blackhawks; the Coyotes still have $8 million left.

The Winnipeg Jets have locked up goaltender Connor Hellebyuck.

The 2017-18 Vezina Trophy finalist has agreed to a six-year, $37 million contract.

Hellebyuck posted 44 wins in 64 starts last season, including six shutouts, leading the Jets to the Western Conference Finals in the Stanley Cup Playoffs

 

CFL:

Week Five of the 2018 CFL season kicks off tonight in Ottawa when the RedBlacks welcome the undefeated Calgary Stampeders.

The 1-2 BC Lions welcome the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to BC Place on Saturday.

CALLIE SWAN:

Callie Swan is hitting the road for the last of six consecutive races in the Lower Mainland.

The Prince George native is competing in BC Superweek, a series of events putting cyclists against the best-of-the-best from around the world, last race is the Tour de White Rock.

The 20-year-old’s best finish thus far is 11th place out of 62 in the New West Grand Prix on Tuesday, posting a time of 59:46.

The Tour de White Rock runs Saturday and Sunday.
