CFL:

A major trade in the CFL sees quarterback Johnny Manziel heading to the Montreal Alouettes from the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

The 25-year-old former Heisman Trophy winner was acquired along with two offensive linemen by the Als in return for a pair of first-round draft picks plus wide receiver Chris Williams and defensive end Jamaal Westerman.

The 1-4 Alouettes have scored a league-low 69 points this year while allowing a league-high 148.

The 2-3 B.C. Lions, coming off that 29-25 loss to the RedBlacks in Ottawa, are idle until Saturday, August 4th when they visit Calgary.

GOLF:

Francesco Molinari is the first Italian to capture a major golf championship.

The 35-year-old Molinari did not make a bogey in his final two rounds to capture the 147th Open Championship at Carnoustie (Scotland) by two strokes.

He finished eight-under-276 (-8).

There was a four-way tie for 2nd at 6-under, including Rory McIlroy, Kevin Kisner, Justin Rose, and Xander Schauffele.

Tiger Woods tied for sixth at five-under (-5), three shots from the top.

Canadian Adam Hadwin tied for 35th at one-over-285 (+1).

PRINCE GEORGE SENIOR LACROSSE:

The third game in the best-of-five final in Prince George Senior Lacrosse for the Dale Rolufs Memorial Trophy will be played tonight, 8PM from Kin 1.

The Westwood Pub Devils and RPR Mechanical/J.R. Construction Bandits are tied 1-1.

Cole Paciejewski of Prince George had seven points (4G, 3A) in eight tournament games for Scotland at the Federation of International Lacrosse World Championship in Israel.

Scotland finished 1-7 with the lone victory 14-10 over Ireland (Friday) in its final game.

In earlier action, Scotland lost 12-6 to the Philippines (Thursday), 11-7 to Japan (Wednesday), 14-7 to the Iroquois Nationals (Tuesday), 18-2 to the USA (Monday), 11-8 to England (Sunday), 22-3 to Canada (Saturday), and 18-6 to Australia (Friday, July 13th).

The tournament concluded (Saturday) with the USA knocking off Canada 9-8 in the final.

 

BC SUMMER GAMES:

Cariboo-North-East athletes earned 34 medals (14 gold, 13 silver, seven bronze) to finish sixth out of eight zones at the BC Summer Games in the Cowichan Valley.

Swimmer Jordan Vertue of Prince George racked up seven individual medals including four gold, two silver and a bronze.

The 12-year-old Vertue added a relay bronze for a total of eight medals.

Kaily Pattison of PG captured gold in women’s wrestling.

In girl’s volleyball, the Cariboo-North-East team, which included 11 Prince George players, won gold.

The Cariboo-North-East Boys softball team, that included eight PG players, took bronze.

North-West athletes brought home 13 medals (seven gold, one silver and five bronze).

18 sports were featured.

 

MLB:

Toronto Blue Jays  5  Baltimore Orioles  4

The (46-52) Jays swept the three-game series.

Toronto will continue its six-game homestand tonight against Minnesota.
