NHL:

Former Prince George Cougar Dan Hamhuis has signed a two-year deal with the Nashville Predators worth $2.5 million (1.5 million in 2018-19 and 1 million in 2019-20).

He scored three goals and 21 assists (24 points) over 80 games with the Dallas Stars last season.

The 35-year-old blueliner has played in 1,031 career NHL games, including a six-year stint with the Vancouver Canucks.

Hamhuis returns to Nashville, after he was selected by them 12th overall in the 2001 NHL Draft.

He is coming off a two-year, 7.5 million deal with the Stars.

The Vancouver Canucks have re-signed forward Jake Virtanen to a two-year deal worth $1.25 million per season.

The 21-year-old Virtanen had just 20 points (10 goals) in 75 games with the Canucks in the 2017-18 season.

Former Calgary Flames captain Jarome Iginla will officially announce his retirement on Monday.

The 41-year-old Iginia hasn’t played an NHL game since April of 2017.

 

BCHL:

The new commissioner of the BCHL, Chris Hebb, is in Prince George today.

Hebb, who succeeded John Grisdale last month, will speak with the media on a variety of league topics.

 

PRINCE GEORGE COUGARS:

The Prince George Cougars will be holding a Q&A for all of their fans with the team’s new General Manager Mark Lamb.

The event takes place Thursday night from 6:00-6:30 in front of section Q at the CN Centre.

The Cougars are also holding their next Select-A-Seat opportunity on the same day beginning at 4PM.

Lamb became the Cougars’ sixth GM in franchise history last month.

 

PRINCE GEORGE SENIOR LACROSSE:

The Westwood Pub Devils need one more win to capture their second straight Dale Rolufs Memorial Trophy as playoff champions in Prince George Senior Lacrosse.

The Devils enjoy a 2-1 series lead over the RPR Mechanical/J.R. Construction Bandits in the best-of-five final.

Game Four will be played tonight at 8 at Kin 1, with a fifth game, if needed, on Thursday.

The regular season champion Bandits took the opener 9-5 before the Devils came back with 13-4 and 8-7 victories.

The Bandits top player, Cole Paciejewski, returned to the lineup in game three and was held to one goal and one assist.

Paciejewski played for (1-7) Scotland last week and notched seven points (4G, 3A) in eight tournament games at the Federation of International Lacrosse World Championship in Israel.

 

MLB:

Minnesota Twins  5  Toronto Blue Jays  0

The Twins go for a three game sweep today (1:07 PT) over the (46-54) Jays, who are 3-2 on a six-game homestand.

 

CFL:

Johnny Manziel is not expected to start at quarterback for the Montreal Alouettes on Thursday against the visiting Edmonton Eskimos but there appears a good possibility he could see some action.

The 25-year-old Manziel began practice with his new team on Monday following his trade from the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

Matt Shiltz has been taking most of the first-team snaps at QB for the 1-4 Alouettes who have scored a league-low 69 points this year while allowing a league-high 148.

NFL: 

The LA Rams and Todd Gurley have reached an agreement on a four-year contract extension worth $60 million.

The deal includes $45 million guaranteed, the largest guarantee given to a running back.

 

GOLF:

The RBC Canadian Open tees off Thursday at Glen Abbey in Oakville, Ontario with 20 Canadians entered.

World number-one Dustin Johnson headlines the field.

Jhonattan Vegas looks to become the first player to win the Canadian Open three consecutive times.

Pat Fletcher is the last Canadian to win the tournament which was 64 years ago in 1954.


VOLLEYBALL:

The Thompson Rivers University (TRU) WolfPack of Kamloops will be coming to Prince George in late August to hold their preseason men’s volleyball training camp.

Duchess Park grad Ryan Hampe will be entering his first season with the team.

“This will be similar to what the BC Lions do in Kamloops. We will get the guys together and begin to prepare for the season,” said TRU head coach Pat Hennelly in a news release.

NBA:

Cleveland Cavaliers five-time all-star forward Kevin Love has signed a four-year, $120 million contract extension.

His overall deal is five years, $145 million.
