PRINCE GEORGE SENIOR LACROSSE:

Westwood Pub Devils  9  RPR Mechanical/J.R. Construction Bandits  6

Devils win the series 3-1 to capture their second straight Dale Rolufs Memorial Trophy as PG Senior Lacrosse playoff champions.

Westwood Pub took control early in building period leads of 3-0 and 7-5.

Devils goalie Jamie Bellamy was named Playoff MVP.

The regular season-champion Bandits took the opener 9-5 before the Devils came back with 13-4, 8-7, and 9-6 victories.

NHL:

Former Prince George Cougar Dan Hamhuis signed a two-year deal with the Nashville Predators for a third of the money he made with the Dallas Stars.

The 35-year-old from Smithers will earn $2.5 million (1.5 million in 2018-19 and 1 million in 2019-20).

He is coming off a two-year, $7.5 million contract with the Stars.

Hamhuis notched 24 points (3G, 21A) over 80 games with Dallas in the 2017-18 season.

This will be his second stint with the Predators.

He was selected by Nashville 12th overall in the 2001 NHL Draft.

The minority owner of the Prince George Cougars has played in 1,031 career NHL games with the Predators, Canucks, and Stars, netting 59 goals and 284 assists.

After four years on the job, Trevor Linden has stepped down as the Vancouver Canucks and president of hockey operations.

He is leaving the team to “pursue different endeavours.”

General Manager Jim Benning will take over Linden’s position and report directly to Canucks owner Francesco Aquilini.

Jake Virtanen has a new deal with the Vancouver Canucks.

The 21-year-old Virtanen signed a two-year contract worth $1.25 million per season.

He had just 20 points (10 goals) in 75 games with the Canucks in the 2017-18 season.

Former Calgary Flames captain Jarome Iginla will make his retirement announcement official on Monday.

The 41-year-old Iginla has not played an NHL game since April of 2017.

He spent 20 years in the league, 16 of them with the Flames.

PRINCE GEORGE COUGARS:

The Prince George Cougars will hold a public Q&A with the team’s new General Manager Mark Lamb tonight from 6:00-6:30 in front of section Q at the CN Centre.

Lamb became the Cougars’ sixth GM in franchise history last month.

 

HOCKEY CANADA:

Former Prince George Cougars forward Justin Almeida of the Moose Jaw Warriors has pulled out of Hockey Canada’s World Junior Showcase due to an injury.

The Showcase will be held in Kamloops starting Saturday and running through August 4th.

Teams competing are from Canada, the United States, Finland, and Sweden.

 

PRINCE GEORGE SPRUCE KINGS:

The Prince George Spruce Kings have acquired 19-year-old goaltender Logan Neaton from the Fairbanks Ice Dogs of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) in return for future considerations.

The six-foot-two, 185-pound Neaton posted a 17-4-0-1 record with a 2.00 goals-against-average and .906 save % in 24 games for Fairbanks in the 2017-18 season.

 

MLB:

Minnesota Twins  12  Toronto Blue Jays  6  (11 innings)

The Twins swept the three-game series.

The (46-55) Jays finished 3-3 on a six-game homestand.

Toronto begins a 10-game road trip Friday in Chicago against the White Sox.

The Jays will also face Oakland and Seattle before returning home to meet Boston on August 7th.

The Blue Jays today confirmed that they traded pitcher J.A. Happ to the New York Yankees for infielder Brandon Drury and minor-league outfielder Billy McKinney.

CFL:

The Montreal Alouettes will start Vernon Adams at quarterback when they host the 3-2 Edmonton Eskimos tonight (4:30 PT) to start week seven of the CFL season.

Johnny Manziel could see some action against the Eskimos pending on how the game goes.

The 25-year-old Manziel began practice with Montreal on Monday following a weekend trade with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

The 1-4 Alouettes have scored a league-low 69 points while allowing a league-high 148.

American Robert Garrigus shot a 9-under par 63 to take the first round clubhouse lead.

Adam Schenk is a stroke back.

Canadian David Hearn and world number-one Dustin Johnson are five off the pace at 4-under.

20 Canadians are competing.

Pat Fletcher (in 1954) is the last Canadian to win the tournament.

 

NITRO:

About 100 Race Cars and 25 Jr. Dragsters are expected to compete this weekend in the Big Bux Race, which is hosted by Nitro Motorsports Park (9285 Raceway Road).

Qualifying and eliminations start at 10AM Saturday and Sunday.

 

VOLLEYBALL:

The TRU WolfPack of Kamloops will be coming to Prince George to hold their preseason men’s volleyball training camp in late August.

Duchess Park grad Ryan Hampe will be entering his first season with the team.

“This will be similar to what the BC Lions do in Kamloops. We will get the guys together and begin to prepare for the season,” said TRU head coach Pat Hennelly in a news release.
