HARTLEY’S SPORTS SHORTS: TUESDAY, JULY 31ST

(As of 12:01AM)

MLB:

Oakland A’s  10  Toronto Blue Jays  1

The (48-57) Blue Jays are 2-2 on a 10-game road trip that continues tonight in Oakland.

The (62-46) A’s are two games behind the Seattle Mariners for the last AL wild card spot.

The (63-43) Mariners beat the AL west leading Houston Astros 2-0 on Monday.

###

In a swap of closers, the Toronto Blue Jays dealt Roberto Osuna (and his off-field troubles) to the Houston Astros for Ken Giles (and his on-field problems).

The Jays also get a pair of minor-league pitching prospects.

The 23-year-old Osuna is eligible to pitch in the Majors on Sunday after serving a 75-game suspension under
MLB’s domestic violence policy.

The 27-year-old Giles is 0-2 with 12 saves and a 4.99 ERA this season after putting up 34 saves in 38 chances with a 2.30 ERA last year.

Giles punched himself in the face on May 1st while heading to the dugout after giving up a three-run, ninth-inning homer to Gary Sanchez of the Yankees.

He was demoted to Triple-A Fresno on July 11, after Giles appeared to curse at manager A.J. Hinch when he was lifted from a game.

The non-waiver MLB trade deadline is this afternoon (July 31st) at 1PM PT.

WESTERN HOCKEY LEAGUE:

Former Prince George Cougars forward Ethan O’Rourke has been traded from the Everett Silvertips to the Swift Current Broncos.

The two teams met in the 2018 WHL championship series with the Broncos winning in six games.

The Silvertips dealt the 19-year old O’Rourke along with a third round-pick in the 2020 WHL Bantam Draft to the Broncos in return for 20-year-old defenceman Sahvan Khaira.

O’Rourke, an ex Cariboo Cougar, had just 18 points (6g-12a) in 66 games last season for the PG Cougars and Silvertips and added one goal in 18 playoff contests.

He was sent south of the border on January 1st.

NHL:

Former Flames captain Jarome Iginla made his retirement announcement official Monday in Calgary.

He spent 20 years in the league, 16 of them with the Flames.

“Even though I was from Edmonton, nobody held it against me,” Iginla said. “To get to play in Alberta was a real treat.”

The 41-year-old Iginla scored 625 goals, tying him with Joe Sakic for 15th in NHL history.

He finished with an even 1,300 points in 1,554 games.

Iginla’s final game was April 9th, 2017 while playing for the LA Kings.

He is the Flames franchise leader in goals (525), points (1,095), games played (1,219) and game-winning goals (83).

CFL:

Quarterback Johnny Manziel took first team reps at the Montreal Alouettes practice on Monday, which is a strong indication he will get his first CFL start against the visiting Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Friday night.

The 1-5 Alouettes have scored the fewest points in the league while giving up the most.

The 2-3 BC Lions play Saturday at Calgary against the 6-0 Stampeders.

###

Running back Jerome Messam has been released by the Saskatchewan Roughriders following a criminal charge (of Voyeurism) dating back to November of 2016.

The CFL issued a statement that it will not file a future contract for Messam should any team attempt to sign him.
