BC BASEBALL PROVINCIALS:

(U-15 WEST BANTAM DOUBLE-A CHAMPIONSHIP IN BURNABY)

Prince George LTN Contracting Bantam Knights beat Surrey 9-8 in the Western Division final after knocking off Tri-City 7-3 in the semi-final. They play the Eastern Division winners in today’s final with the winner to advance to the Regionals in San Diego.

The Bantam Knights went 4-0 in the round robin (13-11 over Burnaby (Friday afternoon), 14-4 over Cloverdale (Friday morning), 11-0 over Vancouver Community Mounties (Thursday) and 14-1 over Triangle Vancouver Island (Wednesday).

(U-18 MIDGET DOUBLE-A CHAMPIONSHIP IN MISSION)

Prince George Surg Med Knights won all four of their round robin games after a pair of Saturday victories: 10-0 over Vancouver Minor and 6-5 over Ladner. Earlier, they skunked Kamloops 13-0 (Friday) and doubled Ridge Meadows 12-6 (Thursday).

The semi-finals go today followed by the championship game. The winner of the 10-team tournament advances to the regional midget championship Aug. 12-13 in Fremont, California.

NATIVE FASTBALL:

The Big Guy Lake Blazers team, which includes several Prince George players, has advanced to the semi-finals at the Canadian native fastball championship in Regina.

They play the defending champion Westbank Cardinals today with the winner to advance to the senior men’s final.

Big Guy Lake went 3-0 in the round robin: 8-4 over Peguis Redmen, 2-1 over the Little Black Bears and 15-0 over the TM Chiefs.

Top prize in the senior men’s division is $12,000.

 

MLB:

Toronto Blue Jays  5  Seattle Mariners  1

The (51-59) Blue Jays are 5-4 on a 10-game road trip that concludes this afternoon in Seattle.

Toronto is going for a four-game sweep.

The (63-48) Mariners are 2 1/2 games behind the Oakland A’s for the last AL wild-card spot.

 

CFL: (Final game in Week Eight)

Calgary Stampeders  27  B.C. Lions  18
(Stampeders are 7-0 for the first time in 23 years. The Lions, who are just 2-4, host Edmonton Thursday)

WEST:

Calgary 7-0, Edmonton 5-2, Winnipeg 4-3, Saskatchewan 3-4, B.C. 2-4

HOCKEY CANADA:

Canada’s Under-18 hockey team lost 4-3 against the Czech Republic in an exhibition game Saturday night in
Red Deer.

Taylor Gauthier of the Prince George Cougars allowed four goals on 32 shots.

Canada will start the Hlinka Gretzky Cup Monday in Edmonton against Switzerland.

The tournament runs until Saturday.

There are 22 players on the Canadian team, 11 of them from the WHL.

Saskatoon Blades head coach Mitch Love of Quesnel is one of the Canadian assistant coaches.
