Bekkering to run for SD57 Board of Trustees

Hours after the first nominee was announced for School District 57’s Board of Trustees, another nominee has joined the fray.

Betty Bekkering, retired Coordinator Cooperative Education at the College of New Caledonia, will be in the running this fall.

She was previously on the Board of Trustees from 2011 to 2014 but was not elected for the last term.

“The BC Teachers Federation tried to put as many retired teachers into school boards as possible and I really felt the unbalance of that,” explains Bekkering of the last election, citing the organization’s attempt for more teacher support.

“I really want to see that change and I hope that the teachers are more open to that because they’ve had the Supreme Court rule in favour of the teachers.

“Now we need to get on with making sure that all of that is put in place for the teachers and make sure all of the positions where there are gaps are filled.”

General voting day is October 20th.
