Experienced registration volunteers being recruited to help with evacuees

Volunteer Prince George is calling on experienced registration volunteers to help with the evacuees in the city.

PG is currently home to over 500 evacuees, with evacuation orders from wildfires south of Francois Lake and southwest of Fort St. James being listed as big reasons why.

“We have our database from last years’ wildfires and in that database, we’ve actually marked off everybody that had the training last year for registration so we’re actually calling those experienced people,” explains Volunteer PG General Manager Wendy Pollard, saying they learned a lot from the wildfire evacuee situation that PG faced in 2017.

“Last year it kind of took everybody by surprise so we were dealing with volunteers that had walked in off the street and helped with the City before we were even contracted so we’re just learning to stay on top of it.”

If there is anyone in the community who has not been called by the end of Wednesday, Pollard encourages them to phone Volunteer PG and let them know you do have experience.

There are refresher courses on the registration process being held for volunteers being called on. Courses are in the Volunteer PG office Wednesday from 6pm to 8pm and Thursday from 9am to 11am. Anyone looking to volunteer is asked to take the refresher course.
