WESTERN CANADIAN BASEBALL:

UPDATE AT NOON: The PG Knights have advanced to this afternoon’s final vs. Portage (Manitoba) at Western Canadian 18U AA baseball championship in Manitoba. The Knights today beat the host team 14-8 to finish 3-1 in round robin, the same record as Portage.

The BC-champion Prince George Surg Med Knights are 2-1 at the Western Canadian Midget 18U Double-A baseball championship in La Broquerie, Manitoba.

The Knights beat Alberta (Beaumont Bosox) 6-5 Friday and Manitoba (Portage Pirates) 3-1 Saturday morning before dropping a 6-5 decision against Saskatchewan (North West Prairie Pirates of Lloydminster) Saturday night.

Prince George will conclude the five-team round robin today against the host team (Carillion Saints).

If the Knights win that game they will advance to the final this afternoon.

The Prince George Grays have lost their first three games at the Western Canadian Senior Double-A baseball championship in Moose Jaw.

The Grays dropped an 11-2 decision Saturday against the St. James A’s of Manitoba.

Earlier, P.G. fell 14-8 against the Saskatoon Outlaws and 9-6 against the Moose Jaw Padres on Friday.

The Grays wrap up the round robin with one final game today vs. the Border All Stars.

The (55-68) Blue Jays are 2-4 on a seven-game road trip.

The (71-53) Mariners are 3 1/2 games behind Oakland and Houston in the AL West.

The A’s have an MLB-best record of 39-13 since June 16.

 

STANLEY CUP:

The Stanley Cup will be in Prince George Monday.

Brett Connolly of the Washington Capitals will have a public celebration with the Cup beginning at noon at CN Centre.

 

PG COUGARS:

The Prince George Cougars will open their 2018 Training Camp on Friday and it will continue until the evening of Wednesday, August 29th, with the Cougars annual Black versus White game, which is free to the public.

The six-day Training Camp at CN Centre will involve daily practices, off-ice workouts and scrimmages.

 

WHL-HAY:

Taking Note (Gregg Drinnan) of Kamloops is reporting that former Kamloops coach Don Hay may be joining the Portland Winterhawks as an assistant coach.

Hay has more regular-season and playoff wins than any head coach in WHL history.

PG SPRUCE KINGS:

The Prince George Spruce Kings will play a pair of BCHL exhibition games against the Merritt Centennials.

The two teams meet Wednesday August 29th in Prince George and on Friday, August 31st in Merritt.

The Spruce Kings open their regular season at home on Friday, September 7th against the Chilliwack Chiefs.
