WESTERN CANADIAN BASEBALL:

The Prince George Surg Med Knights are Western Canadian U-18 “AA” baseball champions.

The Knights skunked the Portage Pirates of Manitoba 10-0 in the Sunday afternoon final of the five-team tournament in La Broquerie, Manitoba.

Game MVP Richard French tossed a complete game shutout.

Prince George went 3-1 in the round robin after a 14-8 Sunday morning victory over the host team (Carillion Saints).

The Prince George Grays finished on a winning note at the Western Canadian Senior AA baseball championship in Moose Jaw.

The Grays crushed the Border All-Stars 18-5 on Sunday to conclude the five-team tournament with a 1-3 record.

Border went on to win the final.

 

MLB:

New York Yankees  10  Toronto Blue Jays  2

Fourth straight loss for the (55-69) Blue Jays who finished 2-5 on a seven-game road trip.

Toronto will entertain the (37-87) Baltimore Orioles tonight to begin a six-game homestand.

Los Angeles Dodgers  12  Seattle Mariners  1

The (71-54) Mariners are 3 1/2 games behind Oakland for the final AL wild-card spot.

The A’s have a Major-League best record of 39-14 since June 16.

The Mariners host the Al West-leading Houston Astros tonight.

Seattle is 4 1/2 games back of Houston.

 

LITTLE LEAGUE WORLD SERIES:

The Canadian champions from Surrey are 1-1 at the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

Canada will play 1-1 Mexico tonight with the loser out.

 

SIMON FRASER GOLF:

Trevor Metcalf of Vanderhoof won the Men’s Simon Fraser Open at the Prince George Golf and Curling Club for the fourth time in the last five years.

The 30-year-old Metcalf finished the 36-hole tournament at five-under 137 (69-68), two strokes better than runner-up and first-round leader Brian Magrath (68-71).

Defending champion Trevor Robertson ended up third at two-under (69-71).

A total of 95 golfers competed.

 

STANLEY CUP:

The Stanley Cup is in Prince George today.

Brett Connolly of the Washington Capitals will have a public celebration with the Cup beginning at Noon at the CN Centre.

PRINCE GEORGE COUGARS:

The Prince George Cougars will open their 2018 Training Camp on Friday.

The six-day Training Camp at the CN Centre will continue until the evening of Wednesday, August 29th, with the Cougars annual Black versus White game (free admission).

The Cougars open their pre-season schedule on Friday, August 31st in Kamloops.

 

PRINCE GEORGE SPRUCE KINGS:

The Prince George Spruce Kings will play a pair of BCHL exhibition games against the Merritt Centennials.

The two teams face off Wednesday August 29th in Prince George and on Friday, August 31st in Merritt.

The Spruce Kings open their regular season at home on Friday, September 7th against the Chilliwack Chiefs.
