Regional District of Fraser-Fort George completes Waste Characterization Study

The third waste characterization study at Prince George’s Foothills Landfill has been completed by the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George.

The data presented will consider future waster diversion strategies diverting clean wood waste from the waste stream and working with the City of Prince George to assess seasonal yard waste collection.

Waste Diversion Program Leader, Rachael Ryder says the study further explains what’s entering the landfill.

“We sampled waste coming into the landfill and it was determined in our way stream 66% of our way stream is made up of organics, compostable organics, paper, and plastic so those are the three primary categories we see coming into the landfill.”

Ryder believes one local program could see a lot more use, which in turn would see residents less reliant on using the landfill.

“It would be even better if we could see all of our single-family residential users using our curbside recycling program. I don’t think everybody is so that the services there could use it more and we could see another decrease in the amount of paper going into the landfill.”

Other programs are being kicked around at the moment but will take a little bit longer to become a reality.

“We’re looking at how we can divert some of that material from the landfill and one of the things is to compost clean wood waste and another is the potential to have a seasonal yard waste collection in conjunction with the City of Prince George, further to that, one of the things we’re looking at in the future is should we be looking at food waste composting.”

The Board also approved the following requests for Community and Recreation Grants:

  • $15,000 to the Beverly Community Association for a picnic shelter
  • $2,098 to the Nukko Lake Environmental Weed Society for insurance and repairs
  • $2,000 to the Hixon Community Association for improvements to the recreation area
  • $2,010 to the Bear Lake Recreation Association for concession improvements
