WOMEN’S BASEBALL WORLD CUP:

Pitcher Amanda Asay of PG is one of 20 players on the Canadian women’s baseball team that competes at the Women’s Baseball World Cup in Florida.

Canada, ranked second in the world, will open today against #10 Hong Kong.

UPDATE: CANADA BEAT HONG KONG 4-0. ASAY DID NOT PLAY.

 

LITTLE LEAGUE WORLD SERIES: (in Williamsport, Pennsylvania)

Canada  (represented by Surrey)  vs.  Puerto Rico

PPD. Rain. Both teams are 2-1 and will play their make-up game this afternoon with the loser eliminated.

The winner of the Puerto Rico-Canada game will advance to the international semifinal to face the loser of a Japan-South Korea game.

UPDATE: PUERTO RICO BEAT CANADA 9-4.

 

MLB:

Houston Astros  3  Seattle Mariners  2

The (72-55) Mariners are 4 1/2 games behind Houston and Oakland, who are the co-leaders in the AL West.

The Astros and A’s also share the final wild-card spot.

Oakland has a Major-League best record of 50-14 since June 16.

Toronto Blue Jays  8  Baltimore Orioles  2

The (57-69) Blue Jays are 2-0 on six-game homestand.

UPDATE AT NOON: THE (58-69) JAYS BEAT BALTIMORE 6-0 TODAY (Wed) TO COMPLETE 3-GAME SWEEP.

 

MIDGET BASEBALL:

There will be a pre-game ceremony tonight (Wednesday) at 6 at Citizen Field for the PG Surg Med Knights just prior to their league baseball game.

This will be the Knights first game since winning both the Provincial and Western Canadian Midget Double A championship.

They will be presented with a Provincial banner and a Western Canadian plaque.

 

PRINCE GEORGE COUGARS:

The Prince George Cougars open their 2018 Training Camp on Friday.

The six-day Training Camp at the CN Centre will continue until Wednesday, August 29th, with the Cougars annual Black versus White game (free admission).

The Cougars open their pre-season schedule on Friday, August 31st in Kamloops.

 

PRINCE GEORGE SPRUCE KINGS:

The Prince George Spruce Kings begin their training camp Friday.

They have 14 returning players from the team that reached the BCHL championship series last season.

The Spruce Kings will play a pair of exhibition games next week against the Merritt Centennials.

The two teams face off Wednesday, August 29th in Prince George and on Friday, August 31st in Merritt.

The Spruce Kings start their BCHL regular season at home on Friday, September 7th against the reigning RBC Cup-champion Chilliwack Chiefs.

 

B.C. JUVENILE GOLF:

Natasha Kozlowski of Prince George is tied for 10th entering the second round of the BC Juvenile Girls’ golf championship in Kelowna.

The 16-year-old Kozlowski (who won the Ladies Simon Fraser in Prince George this month) began with an 11-over 84, which is 11 strokes back of the leader Emma Yang of Langley, who started with a 73.

15 golfers are competing in the 54-hole tournament.

Last month Kozlowski placed 31st at the B.C. women’s amateur championship in Golden and 24th in the junior girl’s provincial championship in Kimberley.

UPDATE: KOZLOWSKI MOVED UP TO A TIE FOR 9th AFTER THE SECOND ROUND FOLLOWING A 79 TO GIVE HER A 36-HOLE SCORE OF 163, WHICH IS 14 SHOTS FROM THE TOP.

SOCCER:

The UNBC Timberwolves will begin their Canada West men’s soccer season this weekend at Masich Place.

The Timberwolves will host the Victoria Vikes Friday and Saturday night at 6 if the air quality is less than seven.

In the conference’s annual pre-season coaches poll, UNBC is eighth and Victoria ninth out of 13 teams.

 

NFL:

The Buffalo Bills have signed punter Jon Ryan of Regina to a one-year contract

The 36-year-old Ryan spent the last 10 years with the Seattle Seahawks.
