WOMEN’S BASEBALL WORLD CUP: (in Florida)

The Canadian team will play its second round robin game in the 12-team tournament today (11AM PT) against Cuba.

Amanda Asay of Prince George is one of eight pitchers for Canada, the second-ranked team in the world.

She did not play against Hong Kong.

Canada will also meet top-ranked Japan Friday (3PM PT), Australia Saturday (3PM) and the Dominican Republic Sunday (11AM).

MLB:

Houston Astros  10  Seattle Mariners  7

The (72-56) Mariners are 5 1/2 games behind Houston in the AL West and 4 1/2 games back of the Oakland A’s for the final wild-card spot.

The A’s have a Major-League best record of 50-15 since June 16.

Seattle will begin a 9-game road trip Friday in Arizona.

The (58-69) Blue Jays swept the three-game series.

Toronto will continue a six-game homestand Friday against the Philadelphia Phillies.

 

PRINCE GEORGE COUGARS:

The Prince George Cougars open their 2018 Training Camp on Friday with 20 veteran players eligible to return.

The six-day Camp at the CN Centre will continue until Wednesday with the Cougars annual Black versus White game (free admission).

The Cougars open their pre-season schedule on Friday, August 31st in Kamloops.

PRINCE GEORGE SPRUCE KINGS:

The Prince George Spruce Kings begin their training camp Friday.

They have 14 returning players from the team that reached the BCHL championship series last season.

The Spruce Kings will play a pair of exhibition games next week against the Merritt Centennials.

The two teams face off Wednesday in Prince George and on Friday, August 31st in Merritt.

The Spruce Kings start their BCHL regular season at home on Friday, September 7th against the reigning RBC Cup-champion Chilliwack Chiefs.

 

SOCCER:

THE UNBC SOCCER GAMES THIS WEEKEND AGAINST VICTORIA HAVE BEEN POSTPONED BECAUSE OF THE AIR QUALITY.

The UNBC Timberwolves are scheduled to begin their Canada West men’s soccer season this weekend at Masich Place.

The Timberwolves will host the Victoria Vikes Friday and Saturday night at 6 if the air quality in Prince George is less than seven.

In the conference’s annual pre-season coaches poll, UNBC is eighth and Victoria ninth out of 13 teams.

 

B.C. JUVENILE GOLF:

Natasha Kozlowski of Prince George is tied for 9th entering the third and final round of the BC Juvenile Girls’ golf championship in Kelowna.

The 16-year-old Kozlowski (who won the Ladies Simon Fraser in Prince George this month) shot a 79 Wednesday to go along with an 84 Tuesday for a 36-hole score of 17-over 163.

She is 14 strokes back of the leader Emma Yang of Langley (73-76).

15 golfers are competing in the 54-hole tournament that concludes today.

Last month Kozlowski placed 31st at the BC women’s amateur championship in Golden and 24th in the junior girl’s provincial championship in Kimberley.
