SOCCER:

The start of the men’s soccer season for the UNBC Timberwolves has been postponed because of the poor air quality in Prince George.

UNBC was scheduled to host the Victoria Vikes in Canada West regular season action tonight and Saturday but those games will now be played at a later date.

With no university soccer this weekend, the official re-opening of Masich Place Stadium has been moved to Friday, September 21st.

 

WOMEN’S BASEBALL WORLD CUP: (in Florida)

Canada  10  Cuba  7

Amanda Asay of Prince George picked up the win on the mound tossing a complete game.

She allowed seven runs, four of them earned, in five innings as the Canadian team rallied from an early 7-1 deficit.

Canada will play its third round robin game in the 12-team tournament today (3PM Pacific) against top-ranked Japan.

Both teams are 2-0.

Canada will also meet Australia Saturday (3PM) and the Dominican Republic Sunday (11AM).

 

MLB:

The Seattle Mariners open a nine-game road trip tonight against the NL West-leading Diamondbacks in Arizona.

The (72-56) Mariners are 5 1/2 games behind Houston in the AL West and four games back of the Oakland A’s for the final wild-card spot.

The Blue Jays begin a weekend series against the Philadelphia Phillies tonight in Toronto.

The (58-69) Blue Jays are 3-0 on a six-game homestand.

 

PRINCE GEORGE COUGARS:

The Prince George Cougars open their 2018 Training Camp today at the CN Centre.

The Cougars “Young Guns” game highlights tonight’s schedule beginning at 6PM.

The two rosters consist of listed prospects and free-agent invitees aged 15 to 17-years-old.

There are expected to be 65 players, including 20 veterans, at the six-day Camp, which will continue until Wednesday with the Cougars annual Black versus White game (free admission).

The Cougars open their pre-season schedule in one week on Friday, August 31st in Kamloops.

 

PRINCE GEORGE SPRUCE KINGS:

The Prince George Spruce Kings begin their training camp this afternoon at 3:30 at the Rolling Mix Concrete Arena (RMCA).

The Spruce Kings will have three intra-squad games this weekend starting tonight at 7.

The 2018 BCHL finalists have 14 returning players.

The Spruce Kings will play a pair of exhibition games against the Merritt Centennials.

The two teams meet Wednesday in Prince George and on Friday, August 31st in Merritt.

The Spruce Kings start their BCHL regular season on Friday, September 7th when they host the reigning RBC Cup-champion Chilliwack Chiefs.

 

B.C. JUVENILE GOLF:

Natasha Kozlowski of Prince George ended up tied for ninth in a field of 15 at the BC Juvenile Girls’ golf championship in Kelowna.

The 16-year-old Kozlowski (who won the Ladies Simon Fraser in Prince George this month) finished the 54-hole tournament with a (24-over) 243 total, which was 17 shots off the pace.

She closed with an 80 following earlier rounds of 84 and 79.

Last month, Kozlowski placed 31st at the BC Women’s Amateur Championship in Golden and 24th in the Junior Girl’s Provincial Championship in Kimberley.
