WOMEN’S BASEBALL WORLD CUP: (in Florida)

Canada  18  Dominican Republic  1

Canada finished 4-1 in the round robin of the 12-team tournament outscoring opponents 42-16.

The Canadian team advances to the ‘Super Round Playoffs,’ which begin on Tuesday.

The super round features the top three seeds in each group playing crossover games before bronze and gold medal matchups take to the field on Friday.

Pitcher Amanda Asay of Prince George did not play against the Dominican Republic.

The 30-year-old Asay picked up the win in Canada’s 10-7 victory over Cuba on Thursday.

She allowed seven runs, four of them earned, in five innings as the Canadian team rallied from an early 7-1 deficit.

 

MLB:

Arizona Diamondbacks  5  Seattle Mariners  2

The (74-57) Mariners are 2-1 on a nine-game road trip.

Seattle is 6 1/2 games behind Houston in the AL West and 5 games back of the Oakland A’s for the final wild-card spot.

The Mariners play Tuesday and Wednesday in San Diego before opening up a key 4-game series Thursday in Oakland.

The (60-70) Blue Jays finished 5-1 on a six-game homestand.

Toronto will start a six-game road trip tonight in Baltimore.

The (37-94) Orioles have the worst record in the majors.

LITTLE LEAGUE:

Hawaii won the Little League World Series following a 3-0 victory over South Korea in the final.

It is the third Little League World Series title for Hawaii, all of which has come in the past 13 years.

Canada (represented by Surrey) finished 2-2.

 

PRINCE GEORGE COUGARS:

This is day four of the Prince George Cougars 2018 Training Camp at the CN Centre.

The Cougars have intra-squad games today (Monday) and Tuesday at 2:30 and 4:30PM.

The Cats have over 60 players, including 20 veterans, at the six-day Camp, which concludes Wednesday night with the Cougars annual Black versus White (free admission) game at 6:00.

The Cougars open their pre-season schedule Friday in Kamloops and Saturday in Kelowna.

They begin their WHL regular season on Friday, September 21st in Victoria with their home opener a week later on the 28th against Kelowna.

 

PRINCE GEORGE SPRUCE KINGS:

The Prince George Spruce Kings have concluded their three-day weekend training camp at the Rolling Mix Concrete Arena (RMCA).

The Spruce Kings, with 14 returning players on their roster, play a pair of exhibition games against the Merritt Centennials; Wednesday in Prince George and Friday in Merritt.

The Spruce Kings start their BCHL regular season on Friday, September 7th when they host the reigning RBC Cup-champion Chilliwack Chiefs.

TENNIS:

This is the opening day of the U.S. Open tennis championships, the final grand slam tournament of the year.

Six Canadians are in the field.

 

LPGA:

Brooke Henderson scored a four-stroke victory at the CP Women’s Open in Regina.

The 20-year-old from Smiths Falls, Ontario finished at 21-under-par, becoming the second Canadian woman to win the tournament (first was Jocelyne Bourassa in 1973).

Henderson earned $337,500 (US) for her second victory of the season and seventh of her career on the LPGA Tour.

 

B.C. JUVENILE GOLF:

Natasha Kozlowski of Prince George tied for ninth in a field of 15 at the BC Juvenile Girls’ golf championship in Kelowna.

The 16-year-old Kozlowski (who won the Ladies Simon Fraser in Prince George this month) finished the 54-hole tournament with a (24-over) 243 total, which was 17 shots off the pace.

She closed with an 80 following earlier rounds of 84 and 79.

Last month, Kozlowski placed 31st at the BC Women’s Amateur Championship in Golden and 24th in the Junior Girl’s Provincial Championship in Kimberley.

SOCCER:

The start of the men’s soccer season for the UNBC Timberwolves was postponed because of the poor air quality in Prince George.

UNBC was to host the Victoria Vikes in Canada West regular season action Friday and Saturday but those games will now be played at a later date.

The Timberwolves will host Trinity Western in men’s soccer on September 7th and 8th at 6PM.

The UNBC women’s soccer team starts its regular season on September 7th at UBC Okanagan.

The Timberwolves will play their home games this year at Masich Place Stadium which will hold its official re-opening on Friday, September 21st just prior to the UNBC men hosting Lethbridge.
