PRINCE GEORGE COUGARS:

The Prince George Cougars have signed 15-year-old forward Craig Armstrong to a WHL Standard Player Agreement.

The Cougars selected Armstrong with their first pick, 9th overall in this year’s WHL Bantam Draft in May.

Armstrong led his hometown Airdrie Xtreme in scoring in both the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League regular season (23 goals and 54 points in 34 games) and in the playoffs (14 goals and 24 points in 13 games).

This is day five of the Prince George Cougars 2018 Training Camp at the CN Centre.

Intra-squad games are scheduled for today (Tuesday) at 2:30 and 4:30PM.

The six-day Camp will conclude Wednesday night with the Cougars annual Black versus White game at 6:00 (free admission).

The Cougars open their pre-season schedule Friday in Kamloops and Saturday in Kelowna.

They begin their WHL regular season on Friday, September 21st in Victoria with their home opener a week later on the 28th against Kelowna.

 

PRINCE GEORGE SPRUCE KINGS:

The Prince George Spruce Kings have trimmed their roster to 25 players following their three-day training camp.

The Spruce Kings have 13 returning players plus three that spent last season with the Cariboo Cougars.

They are carrying three goalies, eight defencemen and 14 forwards.

The Spruce Kings have just two pre-season games and both are this week against the Merritt Centennials;
Wednesday in Prince George (admission $5) and Friday in Merritt.

They start their BCHL regular season on Friday, September 7th at the RMCA hosting the reigning RBC Cup-champion Chilliwack Chiefs.

 

CARIBOO COUGARS:

The Cariboo Cougars have exhibition games this week at the CN Centre.

The Minor Midget Cariboo Cats host Everett Under-15 Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 5PM and Sunday morning at 8.

The Major Midget Cariboo Cougars entertain Everett U-18 Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:45PM and Sunday morning at 10:45AM.

Former Prince George resident Turner Stevenson is in charge of the Everett teams.

Canada finished 4-1 in the round robin of the 12-team tournament outscoring opponents 42-16.

They carry over a 1-1 record.

The super round features the top three seeds in each group playing crossover games

Pitcher Amanda Asay of Prince George has played in one game.

The 30-year-old Asay picked up the win in Canada’s 10-7 victory over Cuba on Thursday.

She allowed seven runs, four of them earned, in five innings as the Canadian team rallied from an early 7-1 deficit.

 

MLB:

The (74-57) Seattle Mariners are 2-1 on a nine-game road trip that continues tonight and Wednesday in San Diego.

The Mariners open up a key four-game series Thursday in Oakland.

The A’s lost 11-4 Monday in Houston.

Seattle is seven games behind Houston in the AL West and 4 1/2 games back of the A’s for the final wild-card spot.

Baltimore Orioles  7  Toronto Blue Jays  0

The (38-94) Orioles, who have the worst record in the majors, ended an 8-game losing streak.

The (60-71) Blue Jays are 0-1 on a six-game road trip.

 

TENNIS:

Three Canadians, Milos Raonic, Denis Shapovalov and Vasek Pospisil won on opening day of the U.S. Open to advance to the second round.

Men’s top-seed Rafael Nadal as well as the Williams sisters also posted a first-round victory.

 

NFL:

Odell Beckham Jr. of the New York Giants has become the NFL’s highest-paid wide receiver.

The Giants have signed the 25-year-old Beckham to a five-year contract extension worth about $95 million with $65 million guaranteed.

 

CFL:

The BC Lions have lost receiver Manny Arceneaux for the rest of the season.

Arceneaux suffered a torn ACL in his right knee in the loss to the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Saturday.

Manu Ginobili has announced his retirement.

The 41-year-old Ginobili helped the San Antonio Spurs win four NBA championships in 16 seasons with the team.

 

SOCCER:

The UNBC Timberwolves will start their Canada West soccer season next week.

The UNBC men host Trinity Western on September 7th and 8th at 6PM.

The Lady Timberwolves begin on September 7th at UBC Okanagan.

The Timberwolves will play their home games this year at Masich Place Stadium, which will hold its official re-opening on Friday, September 21st just prior to the UNBC men hosting Lethbridge.
