The (74-58) Mariners are 2-2 on a nine-game road trip that continues this afternoon in San Diego.

Seattle will open up a key four-game series Thursday in Oakland.

The A’s beat the Houston Astros 4-3 Tuesday.

The Mariners are seven games behind Houston in the AL West and 5 1/2 games back of Oakland for the final wild-card spot.

The (60-72) Blue Jays are 0-2 on a six-game road trip that continues tonight in Baltimore and Friday in Miami.

The Blue Jays are expected to put third baseman Josh Donaldson on waivers today and then trade him on Friday.

Donaldson had a hit and walk in a rehab game on Tuesday.

Former Blue Jay Jose Bautista is on the move again going to the Philadelphia Phillies from the New York Mets for a player to be named later or cash.

Bautista batted .196 with 11 homers and 42 RBIs for the Mets and Atlanta Braves this season.

PRINCE GEORGE COUGARS:

The Prince George Cougars conclude their six-day Training Camp with their annual Black versus White game tonight at 6:00 at CN Centre. (Admission is free)

The Cougars play pre-season games Friday in Kamloops and Saturday in Kelowna.

They also meet Vancouver on September 8th and Victoria on the 9th in Langley before hosting Kamloops in their only home exhibition game on September 15th.

The Cougars begin their WHL regular season on Friday, September 21st in Victoria with their home opener a week later on the 28th against Kelowna.

The PG Cougars have signed 15-year-old goalie Tyler Brennan of Winnipeg to a WHL Standard Player Agreement.

Brennan was selected by Prince George in the first round, 21st overall, in this year’s WHL Bantam Draft in May.

This follows the Cougars signing of forward and fellow first-round selection Craig Armstrong (9th overall) on Monday.

Brennan played last season at the Rink Hockey Academy (RHA) in the Canadian Sport School Hockey League (CSSHL).

He went 11-3-1 in the Bantam Prep Division, with a league-leading goals-against average (1.53), save percentage (.947) and shutouts (five).

 

PRINCE GEORGE SPRUCE KINGS:

The Prince George Spruce Kings start the pre-season with a home and home against the Merritt Centennials.

The two teams meet tonight at the RMCA (admission $5) and Friday in Merritt.

The Spruce Kings have a roster of 25 players, 13 of them veterans.

They are carrying three goalies, eight defencemen and 14 forwards.

The Spruce Kings start their BCHL regular season on Friday, September 7th at the RMCA hosting the reigning RBC Cup-champion Chilliwack Chiefs.

 

BCHL:

Brandon West of Prince George is out as head coach of the Surrey Eagles after he and team mutually agreed to part ways.

Former Vancouver Canuck Peter Schaefer has taken over as coach.

West leaves the organization because of personal reasons, according to a team news release.

He led the Eagles to a 26-22-8 record last season and a first-round playoff victory over the Langley Rivermen.

Surrey lost to the PG Spruce Kings in the Mainland Division Final.

 

CARIBOO COUGARS:

The Cariboo Cougars have exhibition games against Everett this week at the CN Centre.

The Minor Midget Cariboo Cats host Everett Under-15 Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 5PM and Sunday morning at 8.

The Major Midget Cariboo Cougars entertain Everett U-18 Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:45PM and Sunday morning at 10:45AM.

Former Prince George resident Turner Stevenson is in charge of the Everett teams.

 

TENNIS:

Eugenie Bouchard won her opening match at the U.S. Open to become the fourth Canadian to advance to the second round.

The others are Milos Raonic, Denis Shapovalov, and Vasek Pospisil.

Roger Federer also won to improve to 18-0 in first-round matches at the U.S. Open.

 

CFL:

Johnny Manziel has returned to practice for the Montreal Alouettes.

Manziel has missed the Als last two games while in the concussion protocol.

Racing goes Saturday night at 7 and Sunday afternoon at 2 with time trials an hour earlier.

The PGARA Championship Finale will take to the track on Saturday, September 8th.

 

SOCCER:

The UNBC Timberwolves will start their Canada West soccer season next week.

The UNBC men host Trinity Western on September 7th and 8th at 6PM.

The Lady Timberwolves begin on September 7th at UBC Okanagan.

The Timberwolves will play their home games this year at Masich Place Stadium, which will hold its official re-opening on Friday, September 21st just prior to the UNBC men hosting Lethbridge.
