Cafeteria Workers at UNBC vote in favour strike due to low wages, job insecurity

Cafeteria workers at UNBC including Tim Horton’s and the Agora Dining Hall have voted in favour of strike action.

The workers are members of the UNITE HERE Local 40 as they preparing to strike over low wages and job insecurity.

According to the union, many of the cafeteria workers are earning less than their counterparts at UBC and Simon Fraser University.

“Nearly poverty wages in some cases and in some cases just a little bit above,” explains UNITE HERE Local 40 researcher Octavian Cadabeschi.

“They’ve been fighting for some time now to try to get those jobs transformed into good jobs that their families can depend on.

“UNBC is recognized as one of the best university experiences, it’s recognized as one of the best teaching universities, and so it has a responsibility to set a standard and to keep that standard with other universities.”

The Chartwells’ food service contract with UNBC expires at the end of the school year.
