Cougars acquire 6’7 overage winger from the Thunderbirds

The Prince George Cougars will have a more physical presence following the acquisition of 20-year-old forward Mike MacLean from the Seattle Thunderbirds.

The Thunderbirds sent the 6’7, 234-pound MacLean, along with 16-year-old prospect Sam Schoenfeld and a conditional bantam draft pick to the Cougars, in return for 17-year-old prospect Keegan Craik and a fifth-round draft choice.

“MacLean is a big, physical winger who’s a late bloomer and someone we think still has a lot of untapped potential,” said Cougars General Manager Mark Lamb in a team release.

MacLean split last season between the Thunderbirds and the Lloydminster Bobcats of the AJHL.

In 38 games with Seattle, he notched two goals, two assists and 42 penalty minutes.

Schoenfeld played for the Okanagan Hockey Academy’s (OHA) Elite 15 team last season in the Canadian Sport School Hockey League.

The 6’3, 180-pound defenceman will suit up for OHA Midget Prep Red this season.

Craik was originally drafted by the Cougars in the fifth-round, 98th overall, in the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft.
