CHICAGO CUBS: JARED YOUNG

Infielder Jared Young of Prince George is the Chicago Cubs Minor League Player of the Year.

The 23-year-old Young batted .300 with 16 homers and 76 RBIs in 120 combined games between the Class-A South Bend Cubs and Class-A Advanced Myrtle Beach Pelicans.

In a breakthrough year, Young was also named the Cubs’ Minor League Player of the Month for both July and August.

He and his parents will be flown to Chicago for a special ceremony at Wrigley Field on Thursday, September 27th ahead of the Cubs’ game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

MLB:

LA Dodgers  3  Colorado Rockies  2

The win moves the (84-68) Dodgers 1 1/2 games ahead of the second place Rockies in the NL West; LA has 10 games remaining.

Same teams meet again this evening in Los Angeles.

Houston Astros  7  Seattle Mariners  0

The (83-68) Mariners, with just 11 games left, are 7 games behind Oakland for the second and final AL wild-card spot.

Seattle is 4-2 on a 10-game road trip, which continues tonight in Houston.

Toronto Blue Jays  6  Baltimore Orioles  4

Orioles club-record 108th loss of the season.

The (69-82) Blue Jays are 4-4 on a nine-game road trip that concludes tonight in Baltimore.

 

UNBC TIMBERWOLVES:

Midfielder Francesco Bartolillo of the UNBC Timberwolves has been named Canada West third star of the week.

The T-Wolves captain scored twice and added an assist in Sunday’s 3-0 victory over the Saskatchewan Huskies.

Bartolillo, a fifth-year player from Calgary, is the UNBC all-time leading goal scorer in men’s soccer with 13.

The 1-1-2 UNBC men will host the Lethbridge Pronghorns Friday at 6 p.m. and the Calgary Dinos Sunday at noon.

(The official re-opening of Masich Place Stadium will take place just prior to the Lethbridge game)

Meanwhile, the 1-1-2 UNBC Lady Timberwolves visit Fraser Valley Friday night at 5:30 and Trinity Western Saturday night at 5, before their next home game on Friday, September 28th against UBC.

A second make-up date for the UNBC men’s soccer team and the Victoria Vikes has been finalized.

The two sides will meet on Thursday, September 27th in Victoria.

The game was originally scheduled in Prince George on the August 24th weekend as part of a doubleheader but was postponed due to heavy smoke.

Their first make-up game ended in a 1-1 tie on September 4th in Prince George.

 

PRINCE GEORGE SPRUCE KINGS:

The 4-0 Prince George Spruce Kings hit the road for the BCHL Showcase in Chilliwack.

The Spruce Kings play the 1-3 West Kelowna Warriors Thursday afternoon at 1:30 and the 1-2 Penticton Vees Friday at 4PM.

 

PRINCE GEORGE COUGARS:

The Prince George Cougars are off to Victoria to start their WHL regular season with back-to-back games against the Royals on Friday and Saturday.

The Cougars will play their next three against the Rockets: Wednesday the 26th in Kelowna, Friday the 28th (home opener) and Saturday the 29th in Prince George.

The Cats finished 3-1-1 in the pre-season.

 

CARIBOO COUGARS:

The Cariboo Cougars begin their 40-game BCMML regular season with home games this weekend at Kin 1.

The Major Midget Cougars host the Valley West Hawks Saturday (4PM) and Sunday (10:30AM).

 

NHL: (Exhibiton)

Edmonton Oilers  4  Vancouver Canucks  2

Bo Horvat set up both Vancouver goals that were scored by Sven Baertschi and Nikolay Goldobin.

The Canucks play the second of seven pre-season games tonight when they host the Calgary Flames.

 

NFL:

The third week of the NFL season begins Thursday with the New York Jets at the Cleveland Browns.

Even though they haven’t won since 2016, the Browns are 3-point favourites.

 

CFL:

B.C. Lions quarterback Travis Lulay is listed as week-to-week with a dislocated shoulder.

The 34-year-old Lulay hopes to return this season.

The 5-6 Lions have seven remaining, including Saturday’s home game against Hamilton.
