PG council votes on illegal dumping, considers re-opening transfer station

The city of Prince George is still looking for a solution to it’s illegal dumping problem.

At council’s meeting last night, Councillor Brian Skakun requested that council work with the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George (RDFFG) and “key stakeholders” like Spruce City Wildlife Association, to find a solution to the issue.

Council discussed two other possible remedies; opening the Quinn Street Transfer Station, which stopped taking waste in 2013, and increasing fines for people caught doing the dumping.

Skakun said he wanted to find some sort of “comprehensive strategy” to combat an issue that he says many residents are concerned about. He said one possible reason for the problem is that Prince George doesn’t have enough accessible places for residents to drop their refuse, but it’s not the only issue.

“Some people just don’t care, they don’t want to spend the money to go to the landfill and they think it’s just easier to dump it. It’s not a lot of people that do it, but it’s the people who do it that really don’t care about our environment or the community.”

He also mentioned that while the city may have other plans for Quinn Street, like storing road salt, there are other areas to do it.

Council carried the motion to both implore the Regional District for collaboration and to consider re-opening Quinn Street Transfer station.
