PRINCE GEORGE COUGARS:

(WHL Opening Night)

Victoria Royals  2  Prince George Cougars  1  (Shootout)

Dino Kambeitz scored the only goal in the shootout, in the fifth round.

The Royals forced overtime when Brandon Cutler beat Taylor Gauthier with just 67 seconds left in regulation time.

Josh Maser gave Prince George a 1-0 lead at 4:49 of the third.

Gauthier made 33 saves while ex Cariboo Cougar Griffen Outhouse blocked 28 for the Royals.

The same two teams meet again tonight in Victoria.

The Cougars began their 25th WHL regular season by naming Josh Curtis the 24th captain in franchise history.

The team’s four alternate captains are Joel Lakusta, Jackson Leppard, Josh Maser and Ryan Schoettler.

 

PRINCE GEORGE SPRUCE KINGS:

(BCHL Showcase in Chilliwack)

Prince George Spruce Kings  3  Penticton Vees  2

Ben Brar scored twice for the third time in six games for the 5-1 Spruce Kings.

Nicholas Poisson snapped a 2-2 tie at 8:27 of the third.

Logan Neaton made 28 saves as Penticton outshot Prince George 30-26.

The Spruce Kings play their next three games on the Lower Mainland: Friday in Surrey, Saturday September 29th in Langley and Sunday, September 30th in Coquitlam.

West Kelowna Warriors  4  Prince George Spruce Kings  0 (Thursday)

Ex-Cariboo Cougar Mason Richey scored one of the goals for West Kelowna, who tallied once in the first and three more in the second.

 

CARIBOO COUGARS:

This is the opening weekend of the BC Major Midget League season.

The Cariboo Cougars begin their 40-game schedule by hosting the Valley West Giants tonight at 6 and Sunday morning at 10:30 at Kin 1.

 

NHL: (Exhibition)

The Vancouver Canucks play the Flames tonight in Calgary.

The Canucks are 1-2 in the pre-season with four games remaining.

 

UNBC TIMBERWOLVES:

UNBC Timberwolves  1  Lethbridge Pronghorns  0  

T-Wolves captain Francesco Bartolillo scored on a penalty kick in the 17th minute, his fourth goal of the season and the team record 14th of his career.

Rob Goodey posted the shutout for the 2-1-2 UNBC men who host the 3-4 Calgary Dinos Sunday at noon at Masich Place Stadium.

(Canada West Women’s Soccer) (in Abbotsford)

Fraser Valley Cascades  2  UNBC Lady Timberwolves  1

Paige Payne scored the only goal for UNBC, who held a brief 1-0 lead in the first half.

The 1-2-2 Lady Timberwolves visit the 4-1 Trinity Western Spartans tonight at 5.

The UNBC women have their next home game on Friday against UBC.

The UNBC men’s soccer team and the Victoria Vikes will play a make-up game on Thursday in the provincial capital.

The game was originally scheduled in Prince George on the August 24th weekend as part of a doubleheader but was postponed due to heavy smoke.

Their first make-up game ended in a 1-1 tie on September 4th in Prince George.

The (70-84) Blue Jays are 1-1 on a seven-game homestand, which continues this afternoon (1:00 PT) and Sunday against Tampa.

Toronto will also entertain Houston Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday before wrapping up its year with a three-game series in Tampa beginning on Friday.
