The Major Midget Cariboo Cougars skunked the defending league champion Okanagan Rockets 3-0 Sunday to complete a weekend sweep. Dorrin Luding earned the shutout with 23 saves. Cariboo won the Saturday game 4-1. At the midway point of the BCMML 40-game season, the Cougars are in first place with a 17-2-1 record followed by the Vancouver NW Giants at 15-4-1 with the third place Rockets at 13-6-1. The Cougars put an 8-game win streak on the line when they
host the 1-18-1 Thompson Blazers Saturday at 7:15 p.m. and Sunday at 11:30 a.m. at Kin 1.

–The Prince George Spruce Kings split a pair of home games against the Coquitlam Express. The Spruce Kings took the opener 6-4 Friday before the Express came back with a 4-1 victory Saturday. The 16-11-0-2 Spruce Kings are in 2nd place in the BCHL Mainland Division a point behind the Chilliwack Chiefs and four ahead of the Langley Rivermen. Prince George will host Chilliwack Friday and Saturday. The Chiefs, who have won four straight, host Langley Wednesday.

–The Prince George Cougars host the Prince Albert Raiders Wednesday. Both teams are 13-14. The Cougars are tied with Seattle for 8th in the Western Conference, a point behind the Kamloops Blazers. The Raiders are tied with Kootenay for 9th in the Eastern Conference, a point back of Moose Jaw. P.G. will also play at Kelowna on Friday and at Kamloops on Saturday.

–P.G. Cougars 20-year-old forward Jari Erricson has been handed a two-game suspension by the WHL for a cross checking major and game misconduct at the end of a game against the Regina Pats on November 26th.

–Former Winnipeg Jets coach Claude Noel has been hired as the Vancouver Giants head coach. The 10-18 Giants fired Troy Ward on Wednesday. They are last in the WHL Western Conference, six points behind Prince George and Seattle. Noel coached the Jets from 2011-2014, compiling an 80-79-18 record.

–The UNBC Timberwolves won on home court in Canada West basketball in their final league action in 2014. The Lady Timberwolves outscored the UBC Okanagan Heat 76-70 for their first victory of the season. They are 1-7. The UNBC men improved to 3-5 as they upended UBCO 69-63 before 424 fans to sweep the doubleheader. UNBC will visit MacEwan Jan 9 and 10 with its next league home games against TRU Jan 16 and 17.

–The Provincial high school volleyball season is complete. At the Provincials: Duchess Park placed 4th and College Heights 13th out of 16 at the Girls Triple A in Parksville. Duchess, the most sportsmanlike team, lost the bronze medal match to Little Flower Academy. D.P. Todd finished 7th at the Girls Double A in Mill Bay; D.P. Todd was 6th and College Heights 8th at the Boys Double A in Langley; Cedars Christian ended up 8th at the Girls A in Kelowna and PGSS came last out of 20 at the Boys Triple A in Langley.

–Prince George Inner City fighter Jag Seehra earned the Golden Boy award as the top boxer of the 75th Golden Gloves in Cloverdale. Seehra, a five-time Golden Gloves champ, beat AJ Bopari of Kelowna in the final of the 69 kilos class. His team-mate Kenny Lally did not have an opponent and ended up in an exhibition.

–College Heights dominated its own Jr. Boys Icebreaker basketball tournament crushing Duchess Park in the final 68-36..
