Canada Post advises an early start to beat the holiday rush

If you’ve got some packages to send for Christmas, Canada Post says “the sooner, the better”.

Spokesperson Anick Losier with Canada Post says you will pay less the earlier you get your parcel in the post.

“We’ve really stepped-up our operations this year, because we knew we’d be getting a lot of parcels in our system,” she says, “Last year, we delivered 35 million parcels between November 15th and December 31st and we’re expecting about a 20% increase.”

A recent trend is showing a growing surge in Canada Post delivering packages ordered online, especially over the last eight months with one million addresses doing it for the first time.

“What it means for Canada Post is that right now, we’re delivering two out of three parcels that are ordered online because someone somewhere needs to deliver them,” she says. “On the West Coast, we’re seeing the biggest growth. Just compared to last year, it’s in the 25 – 26% range, we’re seeing such a difference in just nearly a year.”

Canada Post is advising you ship your packages seven to 10 days ahead of when you’d like it to arrive across the country, though for a premium fee, a parcel can be rushed, if they get it by the 22nd.

Staff are already working seven days a week, 23 hours a day, according to Losier, “If you go into one of our plants this time of year, it’s like going into an ant hill, it’s people that are just super busy with mountains of parcels. You know, I think we could rival Santa Claus’ workshop.”
