UNBC TIMBERWOLVES:

(Canada West Soccer)

Defender Gordon Hall and forward Paige Payne of the UNBC Timberwolves have been named to the Canada West all-star soccer teams.

Hall becomes the first UNBC player selected to a Canada West first all-star team.

He is the only three-time CW all-star in UNBC Athletics history.

Payne was chosen to the women’s second all-star team.

She had a breakout season with a team record eight goals, which was fifth in the Conference.

The UNBC Timberwolves have their Canada West women’s and men’s basketball home openers this weekend at the Northern Sport Centre.

The Timberwolves host the Winnipeg Wesmen Friday night at 6 and 8 and Saturday night at 5 and 7.

Both UNBC teams are 2-0.

Winnipeg is 0-2 in the women’s division and 1-1 in the men’s standings.

 

CURLING:

Kingston, Ontario beat out Prince George and two other cities for the right to host the 2020 Brier (Canadian men’s curling championship).

The City of Prince George announced in January of its intention to put in a formal bid.

 

NHL: (One game on Halloween night)

Jake Virtanen scored twice for the 8-6 Canucks who will conclude a four-game homestand Friday against Colorado.

Patrick Kane did not play for the 6-4-3 Blackhawks due to an illness.

The Thursday NHL menu includes all Canadian teams in action, except Vancouver.

The Winnipeg Jets play Florida in Finland (11AM PT).

Elsewhere, Chicago is at Edmonton, Colorado is at Calgary, Washington visits Montreal, Dallas faces off in Toronto and Buffalo is at Ottawa.

 

PRINCE GEORGE COUGARS:

(WHL)

The Prince George Cougars start November with a pair of home games against the (7-4-2) Seattle Thunderbirds, Friday and Saturday.

The Cougars are coming off a 5-4 loss to Brandon as the Wheat Kings scored three unanswered goals in the second period.

The Cougars have been outscored 17-5 this season in the middle period.

Prince George is just 2-5-0-1 in eight home games.

The 5-7-1-2 Cougars are tied with the (6-6-0-1) Kamloops Blazers for third in the BC Division, one point ahead of the (6-10) Kelowna Rockets.

The Vancouver Giants granted their leading scorer’s trade request.

The Giants dealt 19-year-old James Malm to the Calgary Hitmen in return for forward Tristen Nielsen.

The 18-year-old Nielsen, from Fort St. John, had left the Hitmen earlier this season in a bid to get a trade as well.

 

PRINCE GEORGE SPRUCE KINGS:

(BCHL)

The Prince George Spruce Kings have their next four games at the Rolling Mix Concrete Arena (RMCA) including Friday against the (7-10-1) Alberni Valley Bulldogs and Saturday vs. the (9-6-0-2) Penticton Vees.

The 12-6-0-1 Spruce Kings also host the (9-8-1) Langley Rivermen November 9th and 10th.

Prince George is third in the Mainland Division, two points behind the Coquitlam Express and five back of the Chilliwack Chiefs.

Spruce Kings sniper Ben Brar is tied for the BCHL lead in goals with 15 (along with Kevin Wall of Chilliwack).

 

CARIBOO COUGARS:

(BCMML)

The Cariboo Cougars head to Saanich to face the (2-7-1) South Island Royals Saturday night at 6:30 and Sunday morning at 8:30.

The 5-3-2 Major Midget Cougars are in sixth place in the BCMML, but just four points out of first.

 

PG MIDGET HOCKEY:

BC Hockey’s Midget AA North Central Bobcats host the Okanagan Central team Saturday afternoon at 12:30 and Sunday morning at 8:45 in Kin 1.

 

McCOVEY:

Baseball Hall of Famer Willie McCovey has passed away after battling a variety of health issues.

The former San Francisco first baseman and left fielder was 80.

McCovey was a .270 career hitter with 521 home runs and 1,555 RBIs in 22 major league seasons, 19 of them with the Giants.

 

NFL:

A couple of struggling Bay area teams meet in Thursday night football.

The 1-7 San Francisco 49’ers host the 1-6 Oakland Raiders in the week nine opener.

 

CFL: (Week 20)

The BC Lions host the Calgary Stampeders Saturday in the final CFL game of the regular season.

The 12-5 Stamps need a win or a tie to end up first and receive an opening-round bye.

The 9-8 Lions will finish fourth and play at Hamilton in the East semi-final.
