A great weekend for Prince George hockey teams.

The PG Cougars, Spruce Kings and Cariboo Cougars all went 2-0, while the Cariboo Cougars Minor Midget team won all three games for a combined 9-0 record.

PRINCE GEORGE COUGARS:

(WHL)

The Prince George Cougars concluded a three-game homestand with back-to-back victories over the Seattle Thunderbirds; 4-1 (Friday) and 2-0 (Saturday).

Taylor Gauthier made 37 saves for his first career WHL shutout in front of 3,585 fans on Mega Jackpot and Pink in the Rink night at the CN Centre.

Cole Moberg scored the winner at 6:19 of the first and drew an assist on Jackson Leppard’s power-play tally in the second.

The Cougars are 7-7-1-2 (including 4-5-0-1 on home ice).

Prince George is third in the BC Division, three points ahead of both Kamloops and Kelowna.

PG is also one point in front of Seattle in the Western Conference.

The Cougars visit the (12-3-2) Vancouver Giants Saturday night and Sunday afternoon.

The Giants lead the BC Division and Western Conference standings.

The Cougars ended a four-game losing skid thanks to superb goaltending from Isaiah DiLaura and four unanswered goals in the first.

DiLaura made 21 saves, losing his shutout bid with just 38 seconds left in the game before 2,372 fans.

 

PRINCE GEORGE SPRUCE KINGS:

(BCHL)

The Prince George Spruce Kings won both of their home weekend games; 2-1 over Alberni Valley (Friday) and 3-2 in overtime over the Penticton Vees (Saturday).

Ben Poisson scored his second goal of the game at 1:46 of overtime in front of 765 hometown fans.

Ben Brar notched his 16th goal (second in the BCHL) of the season and added an assist for the Spruce Kings.

Prince George is tied with Coquitlam for 2nd in the Mainland Division, five points behind Chilliwack.

The 14-6-0-1 Spruce Kings host the 9-10-1 Langley Rivermen Friday and Saturday.

Corey Cunningham and Craig MacDonald of Prince George scored for the Spruce Kings, who outshot the Bulldogs 45-19 before 907 fans at the Rolling Mix Concrete Arena (RMCA).

The 7-3-2 Major Midget Cougars have won five straight to move into fourth place in the BCMML, four points out of first.

Cariboo will visit the (10-4) Okanagan Rockets Saturday night at 5 and Sunday morning at 10 in Kelowna.

Cariboo will visit the (5-3-1) Thompson Blazers Minor Midget in a tripleheader on November 16th, 17th and 18th in Chase.

NHL:

Don Nachbaur of Prince George has been sacked as an assistant coach with the LA Kings.

The Kings fired Nachbaur and head coach John Stevens following an NHL worst 4-8-1 start.

Former Vancouver Canucks bench boss Willie Desjardins has taken over as the Kings head coach on an interim basis for the rest of the season.

LA will host Anaheim Tuesday in its next game.

The Vancouver Canucks begin a six-game road trip Tuesday in Detroit against the 4-8-2 Red Wings.

Vancouver will also visit Boston Thursday, Buffalo Saturday, NY Rangers Monday (Nov 12th), NY Islanders Tuesday (Nov 13th), and Minnesota (Nov 15th).

The 9-6 Canucks have won three in a row.

 

UNBC TIMBERWOLVES:

The UNBC Timberwolves are 4-0 in Canada West women’s basketball after a sweep of the visiting Winnipeg Wesmen; 75-68 (Friday) and 90-75 (Saturday).

The UNBC men’s basketball team is 3-1 following a split against Winnipeg; an 84-82 Timberwolves victory (Friday) followed by a 96-81 loss (Saturday).

Braden Reed of the PGSS Polars football team is the BC High School Player of the Week.

The QB/LB rushed 20 times for 226 yds and three TDs in a convincing 49-8 victory over Kelly Road in the PG Bowl.

On defence, he had nine tackles and a forced fumble.

The Polars will host the Samuel Roberts Technical Titans of Maple Ridge Saturday night at 5 in the opening round of provincial BCSSFA playoffs at Masich Place Stadium.

The winner will play the second seed from the Western Conference.

Also on Saturday at Masich, Kelly Road will meet the G.W. Graham Grizzlies at 11AM and the junior varsity College Heights Cougars will tackle the South Kamloops Titans at 2:30PM in a first-round playoff game.
