Heather Park gets accessible playground

A new playground has been installed at a park in the Hart.

Heather Park now has a wheelchair accessible playground and includes several other features for all visitors. These are a “friendship swing” so children can swing together, swings with harnesses to provide better stability for those with limited upper body mobility, an elevated access ramp for wheelchair users to have a raised-level playing experience, and a roller slide for safe and sensory play, which is cited as being important for childhood physical development.

Construction began this summer and was completed in mid-October. A fundraising effort by the Heather Park Parent Advisory Council brought in about $125,000 to build the new park.

“The Heather Park Parent Advisory Council saw a need in our area for more safe and accessible playgrounds that could be enjoyed by all children, and worked hard to raise the funds necessary to achieve our goal,” said PAC Chair Rosalie Mellott, in a statement.

“We would like to thank the City of Prince George for working with us to make our goal a reality. Children in the neighbourhood will benefit for years to come.”

Duchess Park also received an accessibility upgrade earlier this year. Other recently replaced playgrounds at local parks include the Sanderson, Jackpine, Quinson, Starlane, and Ridgeview Park locations.
