PRINCE GEORGE COUGARS:

(WHL)

Prince George Cougars  4  Kelowna Rockets  3  (OT)

Josh Maser took a pass from Jackson Leppard to score the winner with just six seconds left in overtime before 2,205 fans at the CN Centre.

Maser finished with a goal and two assists.

Vladislav Mikhalchuk tied the game 3-3 for the Cats, with just 16.3 seconds left in the third.

It was the first time this season the Cougars won after they pulled their goalie for an extra attacker in the final minute of regulation time.

Kelowna led 1-0 after one and PG enjoyed a 2-1 lead after two.

Cole Moberg and Matéj Toman also tallied for Cougars, who moved into second place in the BC Division, a point ahead of Victoria, although the Royals have four games in hand.

The Rockets are four points back of Prince George.

The 9-8-1-2 Cougars continue a five-game homestand when they entertain the (6-9-1-1) Kamloops Blazers
Saturday night at 7 and Sunday afternoon at 2.

The Blazers are last in the Western Conference, three points behind Kelowna and seven back of PG.

 

PRINCE GEORGE SPRUCE KINGS:

(BCHL)

The Prince George Spruce Kings have signed Associate Coach and Director of Player Personnel Alex Evin to a two-year contract extension.

Evin is in his second season with the team.

He is working under Head Coach Adam Maglio, who signed a two-year extension earlier this season.

The Spruce Kings play three games this weekend on Vancouver Island.

They visit the (13-10) Powell River Kings Friday, the (8-15-1) Alberni Valley Bulldogs Saturday, and the (9-13) Nanaimo Clippers Sunday.

The 15-7-0-1 Spruce Kings are tied with the Coquitlam Express for second in the Mainland Division, five points behind the Chilliwack Chiefs with two games in hand on the Chiefs.

Prince George will play its next home game on Wednesday against the Trail Smoke Eaters.

 

CARIBOO COUGARS:

(BCMML)

The 9-3-2 Cariboo Cougars, riding a seven-game win streak, visit the (7-5-1-1) Greater Vancouver Canadians Saturday night at 5 and Sunday morning at 10 in Richmond.

The Major Midget Cougars are in fourth place, but just a point behind second and third, and only three points behind the (11-2-1) first place Fraser Valley Thunderbirds.

The Cariboo Cougars will play in the BCMML’s first Outdoor Game on Sunday, January 20th in Fort St. James on the Nak’azdli Whut’en Territory.

They will face the Vancouver North East Chiefs in the Northern Winter Classic at the Ernie Sam Memorial Arena, which has been outfitted with professional boards and regulation glass.

For the 14th straight year, the Cariboo Cougars have been invited to the Macs International Hockey Tournament, which begins Boxing Day in Calgary.

 

CARIBOO COUGARS MINOR MIDGET:

The Cariboo Cougars Minor Midget team will visit the (5-3-1) Thompson Blazers Minor Midget team Friday night at 7, Saturday afternoon at 2 and Sunday morning at 10 in Chase.

The Cariboo Minor Midgets 15-year-olds are 7-1-1 and tied with the Okanagan Rockets for first place.

There are nine Thursday NHL games including the 10-8-2 Vancouver Canucks at the (11-5-2) Minnesota Wild.

The Canucks, who have lost their last three, are 1-2-2 on a six-game road trip.

Other games tonight that include Canadian teams; Montreal at Calgary, Toronto at San Jose, and Detroit at Ottawa.

The Habs visit the Canucks Saturday.

Sidney Crosby is dealing with an upper body injury that forced him to miss the Penguins practice Wednesday.

Pittsburgh will host the Tampa Bay Lightning this evening.

 

CHL CANADA-RUSSIA SERIES:

(Game Six tonight in Drummondville, Quebec)

Russia  vs  Team QMJHL

The Russians are 3-2 in the six-game series.

They split with the WHL (2-1 WHL win followed by 3-1 Russia victory) and with the OHL (3-1 OHL win and 4-0 Russia victory).

Russia beat the QMJHL 5-1 Tuesday in Sherbrooke.

 

UNBC TIMBERWOLVES:

The UNBC Timberwolves host the Trinity Western University (TWU) Spartans Friday night at 6 and 8 and Saturday night at 5 and 7 at the Northern Sport Centre in Canada West basketball.

The UNBC women are 4-0 while the men sit 3-1.

TWU is 6-0 (women) and 0-6 (men).

 

NBA:

Detroit Pistons  106  Toronto Raptors  104

Pistons coach Dwane Casey was a winner in his first game against his former team.

Reggie Bullock hit a buzzer-beater as Detroit erased a 19-point deficit

The 12-3 Raptors visit the 8-6 Boston Celtics on Friday.

 

MLB:

Despite winning just 10 games, Jacob deGrom of the New York Mets captured the National League Cy Young Award. His victory total was the fewest ever by a Cy Young-winning starter. deGrom finished with a 1.70 ERA.

The American League Cy Young went to Blake Snell of the Tampa Bay Rays. Snell pitched just 180 2/3 innings, fewest ever by a Cy Young-winning starter. The 25-year-old lefty was 21-5 with a 1.89 ERA.

 

NFL:

Week 11 of the NFL season begins tonight in Seattle as the (4-5) Seahawks host the (4-4-1) Green Bay Packers.

The Packers haven’t won on the road (0-4) while the Seahawks are just 1-2 at home.

 

CFL:

Hamilton Tiger-Cats  at  Ottawa RedBlacks  (Sunday 10 a.m. PT)
Winnipeg Blue Bombers  at  Calgary Stampeders  (Sunday 1:30 p.m.)

The winners meet in the Grey Cup on Sunday, November 25th in Edmonton.

 

BC HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL:

Double-A Varsity:

The PGSS Polars play the No. 2-ranked Holy Cross Crusaders of Surrey Saturday at noon at B.C. Place Stadium.

The winner advances to the B.C. high school football Double-A Varsity semi-finals.

Junior Varsity:

The College Heights Cougars will play in the Junior Varsity semi-finals against the Windsor Dukes the Nov. 23rd weekend in North Vancouver.

 

HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL:

The Duchess Park Condors Jr. A girls volleyball team went 5-0 to finish first at the North Central Zone tournament in Quesnel.

The Condors beat North Peace 25-16, 25-9 in the final to qualify Jr. provincial championship Nov 23/24 in White Rock.

 

JUDO:

The Hart Judo Academy earned three bronze medals at the Ontario Open judo tournament in Toronto.

Third place efforts went to Kimiko Kamstra (U-21, -48 kgs), Lochlan Young (U-18 boys, -73 kgs), and Asher Young (U-16 boys, -50 kgs).

Both Koen Heitman (5-2 record) and Maxwell Young (4-2) placed fifth in their senior men’s weight divisions.

 

SWIMMING:

The Prince George Barracuda Swim Club will host its annual Medical Northern Sprint Meet this weekend at the Aquatic Centre.

Racing runs 5:40-7:30 p.m. Friday, 9:10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, and 9:10 a.m. to about 2 p.m. Sunday.

Out of town teams joining the Barracudas are from Quesnel, Williams Lake, Richmond, Chetwynd, Points North, and Grande Prairie.
