Landry’s perfect night pushes UNBC past Spartans

To say everything fell into place for Madison Landry would be an understatement.

The Prince George product and third-year player carried the UNBC Timberwolves women’s basketball team to a come-from-behind 78-77 victory over the Trinity Western Spartans on Friday from the Northern Sport Centre.

Her clutch performance is even more impressive when you consider she had a team-high 25 points and was a perfect 11-for-11 on field goals while also having four fouls.

“At half-time we kind of all got together and let’s really start bringing up the energy and the intensity and brought it together because we all wanted to win. We simply kept pushing and never gave up.”

“It’s really hard because you’re really trying to get the ball or get the steal and you have to be really disciplined so you don’t go for those extra little pokes.”

The game resembled a tale of two halves for UNBC who looked lethargic to start after coming off a bye-week and fell behind 23-15 after the first quarter and never pulled ahead until early in the fourth.

“It took us a little while to get going and we actually came back strong to bridge that gap but the rut in the beginning was really hard to get back over.”

UNBC improves to 5-0 on the season while the Spartans drop to 6-1 with both teams playing again tonight at 5 PM from the Northern Sport Centre.

Former T-Wolf and PG product Sarah Buckingham recorded a team-high 23 points for Trinity Western.

In men’s action, UNBC made short work out of  Trinity Western cruising to an easy 101-58 victory, improving to 4-1 on the season.

The Timberwolves enjoyed a balanced offensive attack with seven players recording 1o or more points.

Chris Ross, Tyrell Laing, Vaggelis Loukas and Jovan Lemay had 12 points each on the night.

What made Ross’s effort more impressive is that all of his points came in the fourth quarter via the three-ball.

“It was a great learning opportunity and the confidence came from the team. We were playing great defense and it felt like I had the green light from everybody on the team and that was a great feeling to let it go and not be worried on whether it goes in or not.”

The Spartans drop to 0-7 on the season and will play the rematch against UNBC at 7 PM.
