Local group Writes to Right human rights violations

A local group wants people to stand up for human rights across the globe.

The Prince George chapter of Amnesty International is holding a global letter-writing campaign, called ‘Write for Rights,’ next week to offer people an opportunity to compose letters to global leaders on human rights issues.

This year, the group is taking a critical eye to ten different cases of human rights violations, specifically focused on how discrimination, abuse, intimidation, and violence “uniquely and disproportionately affect women, and in particular, women who speak out in society.”

“When hundreds of thousands of people around the world get together and send a clear message demonstrating they will stand by a person or group whose human rights are being violated, the impact is huge. It gives people the strength to keep going,” says Sandra Meehan, a volunteer with the organization.

“It also sends a message to those who are violating human rights that they cannot keep their crimes secret because the world is watching. Every letter, email and petition signature chips away at the problem.”

The event takes place at 6:30pm on Dec.10th at Artspace in Prince George.
