The Regional District of Fraser Fort-George is cracking down on illegal dumping.
At their last meeting, the district approved a new strategy to help cut down on people putting their trash where it doesn’t belong, namely on people’s properties and in public spaces.
The strategy is based on three key elements; education, enforcement and infrastructures/services.
“We want to ensure that our residents know which items that they can recycle for free or that they can dispose of at no charge. A lot of things that we find illegally dumped are recyclable or there was no charge associated with them, so we want to make sure people are aware of the right disposal options,” said Rachael Ryder, Waste Diversion Program Leader.
According to the district, public knowledge that illegal dumping regulations are being enforced and will result in fines and prosecution may act as a deterrent to more illegal dumping.
