Two lingering issues followed School District 57 throughout 2018. They are still working to ensure students, especially in elementary grades, are reading at grade level; as well as the ongoing topic of catchment and capacity.

Despite these, Board Chair Tim Bennett considers 2018 a successful year.

“The construction at Kelly Road [School] is well underway and is on track to still open in 2020, we are continuing to grow in terms of our student enrollment count, and our graduation rates saw significant increases such as our six-year completion rate which grew by 6.5 percent,” he explained.

Moving into 2019, Bennett reiterated catchment and capacity needs to be addressed. He also listed the new funding formula and graduation curriculum as issued he would like to address, however, two topics stood out above the rest.

“Our primary focus is on improving core literacy rates for especially our elementary grades and focusing on continuing the momentum when it comes to graduation rates.”

Bennett conceded the fall elections were a slight inconvenience when looking at things the former board could accomplish moving from this year to next. He did, however, remain confident in the new set of faces and hopes to achieve or continue with goals identified when reviewing 2018.
