MANNING TRADE:

Defenceman Brandon Manning of Prince George has been dealt from the Chicago Blackhawks to the Edmonton Oilers as part of a four-player trade.

The Oilers also got prospect defenceman Robin Norell while the Blackhawks acquired forward Drake Caggiula and defenceman Jason Garrison.

The 28-year-old Manning has one goal and two assists in 27 games this season with Chicago, averaging 15:28 of ice-time.

He signed a two-year, $4.5 million deal with the Blackhawks in July.

In 234 career games with the Blackhawks and Philadelphia Flyers, Manning has 46 points (12 goals) and 233 penalty minutes.

 

PRINCE GEORGE COUGARS:

Kamloops Blazers  2  Prince George Cougars  1  (Sunday)

Rookie Goalie Dylan Garand made 35 saves as Prince George outshot Kamloops 36-26.

The only P.G. goal came from Josh Maser on a power play with just 2:09 left in the third period.

The Cougars went 1/7 and the Blazers 0/5 with the man advantage.

The Blazers scored once in each of the first two periods.

Taylor Gauthier stopped 20 of 22 shots before leaving after the second period due to a bout with the flu.

Isaiah DiLaura made just four saves in the third.

The 12-21-1-2 Cougars have lost 11 of their last 13 games to fall four points behind (14-17-2-1) Kamloops for the second and final wild-card spot.

Prince George is also a point ahead of last-place (11-18-4) Seattle in the Western Conference.

The Cougars play their next game Friday in Kelowna with their next home game the following Friday (Jan 11) also against Kelowna.

 

Everett Silvertips  6  Prince George Cougars  1  (Saturday)

The Western-Conference leading Silvertips put the game away early by scoring three unanswered goals in the first period and another in the first minute of the second.

It was the ninth straight home win for the (29-7-1-1) Silvertips, who are (14-0-1-1) in their last 16 overall games.

Ryan Schoettler scored the only goal for Prince George and it came on a power play.

Both teams went 1/5 with the man advantage.

Isaiah DiLaura made 30 saves as Everett outshot P.G. 36-25.

 

Prince George Cougars  2  Seattle Thunderbirds  1  (Friday)

The Cougars ended a five-game losing streak and a seven-game road losing skid.

Taylor Gauthier made 29 saves as Prince George outshot Seattle 32-30.

Vladislav Mikhalchuk opened the scoring 64 seconds into the second period and set-up the game-winner by Josh Maser midway through the third.

 

CARIBOO COUGARS:

The Cariboo Cougars beat the Swift Current Legionnaires 3-2 in their final game at the Mac’s international midget hockey tournament in Calgary.

Cariboo finished round robin play with a 2-1-1 record, which was not good enough to advance to the playoffs.

The Cougars lost 4-2 to Lethbridge AAA Midget Hurricanes, beat the Brampton (Ontario) 45s 4-3 and tied the Calgary Midget AAA Flames 2-2 in their other three games.

(The 16-5-3 Major Midget Cougars are in second place in the BCMML, five points behind the (19-3-1-1) Fraser Valley Thunderbirds.

Cariboo will play its next league game January 19th in Fort St. James against the third-place (14-5-3-2) Vancouver NE Chiefs).

 

WORLD JUNIOR HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIP:

Canada will play Russia tonight at 5 at the World Junior Hockey Championship.

Both teams are 3-0 in Group A.

The Quarter-finals are scheduled for Wednesday.

 

NHL: (One Sunday game)

Vegas  5  Arizona  1

The Vancouver Canucks are 2-0 on a six-game road trip that continues today (10:00 a.m. PT) in New Jersey.

The 19-18-4 Canucks are 8-2-1 in their last 11 games.

Vancouver will visit Ottawa Wednesday, Montreal Thursday, and Toronto Saturday before hosting Arizona on Thursday, January 10th.

 

PRINCE GEORGE SPRUCE KINGS:

The Prince George Spruce Kings play seven of their first eight games in January on the road starting in Merritt on Friday.

They also visit Cowichan Valley Saturday and Victoria Sunday.

The 25-9-1-2 Spruce Kings are in first place in the Mainland Division and the BCHL by just one point over the (26-11) Chilliwack Chiefs.

The Chiefs outscored the Coquitlam Express 7-5 on Saturday.

The Spruce Kings next home game will take place on January 11th when they entertain Cowichan.

 

NFL: (Final game of the regular season)

Indianapolis  33  Tennessee  17

The 10-6 Colts advance to the playoffs while the 9-7 Titans are out.

Wildcard games have Indy at Houston (1:35 PT) and Seattle at Dallas (5:15) on Saturday plus LA Chargers at Baltimore (10:05 a.m.) and Philadelphia at Chicago (1:40) on Sunday.

New Orleans and LA Rams in the NFC and K.C. and New England in the AFC have first-round byes.

 

NBA:

Toronto  95  Chicago  89

The 27-11 Raptors are half-a-game ahead of the (25-10) Milwaukee Bucks in the Eastern Conference and two games in front of (24-12) Indiana.

Toronto will host (18-19) Utah on Tuesday.

 

CANADA WEST BASKETBALL: (UNBC TIMBERWOLVES)

The UNBC Timberwolves host the Thompson Rivers University (TRU) Wolfpack of Kamloops Friday and Saturday in Canada West basketball at the Northern Sport Centre.

The Timberwolves are 6-4 in both divisions.

The UNBC women are tied for seventh while the men are eighth out of 17 teams.

The TRU women are 3-7 while the TRU men have a 4-6 record.
