The Spokane Chiefs scored three unanswered second period goals in just under six minutes, and then held on for a 5-4 victory over the hometown Prince George Cougars before 2,310 fans. The line of Jansen Harkins (2G, 2A), Brad Morrison (2G, 1A) and Aaron Macklin (2A) combined for nine points and all of the Cats scoring. Garret Hughson made 38 saves for the Chiefs who were outshot 42-30, including 18-5 in the third period. The same teams meet again tonight at CN Centre in their final action prior to the Christmas break.

–The 17-17 P.G. Cougars remain third in the tight BC Division, just two points behind Victoria and just two ahead of Vancouver and three in front of last place Kamloops. Vancouver is the hottest team in the WHL with seven consecutive victories.

–The (17-13-0-3) Prince George Spruce Kings have three games left in 2014, all on the road this week. The Spruce Kings, sitting third in the BCHL Mainland Division, visit Langley Thursday, Surrey Friday and Coquitlam Saturday.

–The 12th annual Spirit high school hockey Game featuring PGSS and College Heights Secondary will be played at CN Centre Friday at 12:30.

–The Major Midget leading Cariboo Cougars put a 12-game win streak on the line when they play the Greater Vancouver Canadians Saturday and Sunday in Richmond and Delta.

–Geoff Martinson of Prince George (now living in Vancouver) has been named the BC Senior Male Road Runner of the Year by BC Athletics. Martinson won the 2014 Timex BC Road Running Series winning 4 of his 5 races. Meanwhile, high jumper Alyx Treasure of Prince George was one of three nominees for Senior Female Track and Field Athlete of the Year. Treasure went to the NCAA Track and Field Championships, won the Canadian championship and represented Canada at the 2014 NACAC under-23 Championships in Kamloops where she earned a gold medal.

–The field is set for the Scotties BC Women’s Curling Championship Jan 21-25 at the Golden Ears Winter Club. Patti Knezevic of Prince George will be one of eight rinks to compete in the triple knockout with a page playoff.

–Duchess Park is the site for the Christmas Classic senior basketball tournament Thursday and Friday.
