PRINCE GEORGE COUGARS:

The Prince George Cougars only weekend game will be played tonight in Kelowna against the (17-17-3) Rockets.

The Cougars also visit Tri-City Tuesday and Spokane Wednesday to complete a stretch of 11 consecutive games on the road.

Prince George has lost nine of its last 10 road games and 11 of 13 overall.

The 12-21-1-2 Cougars are four points behind (14-17-2-1) Kamloops for the second and final wild-card spot.

Prince George is also a point ahead of last-place (11-19-4) Seattle in the Western Conference.

The Cougars host Kelowna January 11th and 12th to begin a six-game homestand.

In a major WHL trade, the league-leading Prince Albert Raiders acquired overage and high-scoring centre Dante Hannoun from the Victoria Royals.

In return the Royals picked up overage forward and former PG Cougar Kody McDonald, 18-year-old forward Carson Miller, and a third-round bantam draft pick in 2020.

 

PRINCE GEORGE SPRUCE KINGS:

The Prince George Spruce Kings begin their January schedule with three road games this weekend.

The Spruce Kings visit (23-13-1-1) Merritt tonight, (10-23-4-1) Cowichan Valley Saturday and (22-12-0-2) Victoria Sunday.

The 25-9-1-2 Spruce Kings are in first place in the Mainland Division and the BCHL by just one point over the (26-11) Chilliwack Chiefs.

The Spruce Kings next home game will take place on January 11th when they entertain Cowichan.

WORLD JUNIOR HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIP:

The World Junior Hockey Championship semi-finals today at Rogers Arena in Vancouver have the USA against Russia (1PM) followed by Finland vs. Switzerland (5PM).

The winners play for gold on Saturday.

Canada finished sixth after a 2-1 loss to Finland in overtime in the quarter-finals.

 

NHL: (Canadian teams went 1-3 on Thursday)

Montreal  2  Vancouver  0

Carey Price made 33 saves for his second shutout of the season.

Elias Pettersson left the game in the second period with a lower body injury. There is no timeline for his return but he will remain with the team on the road.

The 20-20-4 Canucks are 3-2 on a six-game trip that concludes Saturday in Toronto.

Vancouver’s next home game will be on Thursday, January 10th against Arizona.

Minnesota  4  Toronto  3

There are seven Friday games in the NHL, but only one that involves a Canadian team as Winnipeg plays at Pittsburgh.

UNBC TIMBERWOLVES:

It is the return of Canada West basketball to the Northern Sport Centre.

The UNBC Timberwolves, who have not played at home since November, host the Thompson Rivers University (TRU) Wolfpack of Kamloops.

The women tip-off at 6PM tonight and 5PM Saturday with the men to follow two hours later.

The Timberwolves are 6-4 in both divisions.

The UNBC women are tied for seventh while the men are eighth out of 17 teams.

The TRU women are 3-7 while the TRU men have a 4-6 record.

 

NBA:

San Antonio Spurs  125  Toronto Raptors  107

Kawhi Leonard, who returned to San Antonio for the first time since being traded to Toronto, was loudly booed throughout the game. He finished with 21 points in 33 minutes.

Ex-Raptor DeMar DeRozan had his first triple-double of his career with 21 points, 14 rebounds and 11 assists for the Spurs.

The 28-12 Raptors are in a virtual tie with the (26-10) Milwaukee Bucks for top spot in the Eastern Conference, 1 1/2 games in front of the (25-12) Indiana Pacers.

The Raptors visit Milwaukee on Saturday and host Indiana on Sunday.

 

NFL:

The NFL playoffs will be down to eight teams from 12 after games are completed this weekend.

Wildcard games have Indy at Houston (1:35 PT) and Seattle at Dallas (5:15) on Saturday plus LA Chargers at Baltimore (10:05 a.m.) and Philadelphia at Chicago (1:40) on Sunday.

The Texans, Cowboys and Ravens are all slightly favoured by a field goal or less while the Bears are 6-point favourites.

New Orleans and LA Rams in the NFC and K.C. and New England in the AFC have first-round byes.

 

JUDO:

Four Prince George judo athletes are headed to Montreal for the Judo Canada Elite 8 Championships from Sunday, January 7th to Sunday, January 14th.

The participants are:

Asher Young, -50 (Hart Judo)
Koen Heitman, -66 (Hart Judo)
Lochlan Young, -73 (Hart Judo)
Tami Goto, -48 (PG Judo)

All four are ranked in the top eight of their U18 weight divisions in Canada.
